Retro-sweet lovers are in for a nostalgic treat as Starburst has gone back to its original name and become Opal Fruits - 22 years after they were rebranded.
It's a sweet dream come true... Opal Fruits are back to make your mouth water all over again. The brand, which Mars changed to Starburst in 1998, returns for 12 weeks only in the four original flavours of strawberry, orange, lemon and lime.
In 1998 Opal Fruits changed its name to Starburst, much to the confusion of the British public. The change was meant to help with brand consistency in the market and to freshen up the image of the brand. When Mars bought Wrigley, they transferred the Starburst product to the Wrigley division.
In 1998 the name changed to Starburst to match what they were called in the US at the time. The only difference between two, is that Starburst includes a lemon and lime sweet and a blackcurrant one, while Opal fruits came in strawberry, lemon, orange and lime.
Starburst does not contain any form of artificial color or flavors. The Mars Company decided to change the ingredients of starburst by removing artificial flavoring and colors back in 2016.
Confectionery giant Mars Wrigley has discontinued the Starburst brand in Australia. The move means the brand's iconic chews, snakes and babies will no longer be stocked. The news came after TikTok creator Nariman Dein uploaded a video expressing her frustration at being unable to find the lollies.
“Our Starburst ® products are imported from Europe and like many businesses that are importing products from overseas, the brand has been exposed to supply chain difficulties and rising cost pressures over the last two years,” a spokesperson for the company said.
