CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Cook County jury Friday found a South Side man guilty of brutally murdering his 9-year-old daughter and then dumping her body in a dilapidated lot near his home in order to hide his actions.
Police indicted Welch for the kidnapping and murder of Katherine and Sheila Lyon. According to court documents, Welch kidnapped the two girls from the mall and traveled miles away with them to a remote location. He then proceeded to murder the girls and burn their remains.
Lyons was paroled in 1961 and pardoned by the Governor of Oklahoma in 1965 after 20 years in prison. He subsequently disappeared into obscurity.
The older sister, Sandra, was released to a halfway house in 2009, while the younger sister, Beth, was released a year later. By 2020, it was reported that Sandra graduated from university and became a scientist, while Beth was married, became a mother, and graduated from law school.
