A new psychology study has found that attractive students earn higher grades at university, but for female students, the grades declined when classes were moved online.
“Attractive people have an advantage because a lot of the time someone is [considered] approachable based on how they look,” junior Kaila Pulley said. Attractive people have advantages in the social aspect of life because people tend to want to talk to them more.
Teachers may unwittingly reward students exhibiting traditionally female behaviour, such as quietness and neatness, which makes life easier for the teachers, the researchers suggest. Girls are routinely given more generous grades in class than boys with the same academic abilities, according to a new study.
More study improves grades, but not as much as you think
However, extra study doesn't make as much difference as people think. An American study found the average grades of high school boys increased by only about 1.5 percentage points for every extra hour of homework per school night.
Intelligent people often earn good grades. But some intelligent people don't earn good grades or go to college. The definition of smart is the ability to achieve one's goals with relatively little effort compared to peers. Good grades are not every intelligent person's goal.
Grades do not measure intelligence, but they do reflect how well we perform in school. The researchers found that the women judged as least attractive earned significantly lower grades, after controlling for their ACT scores. The best-looking women earned higher grades. And male professors were more likely than female professors to give better-looking women higher grades.
In standardized tests, girls tend to outperform boys in humanities, languages and reading skills, while boys tend to do better in math, but when grades are awarded by teachers, girls do better in all subjects.
Males outperform females on most measures of visuospatial abilities, which have been implicated as contributing to sex differences on standardized exams in mathematics and science.
They found some evidence that teachers report better relationships with the more attractive students, which explains some of the achievement gap.
It turns out, being conventionally beautiful has its benefits. According to science, people who are perceived as attractive are more likely to get hired for jobs and seem trustworthy. They are also thought to be healthier and lead a happier life.
