Almost all caskets decompose eventually. Wicker and Plywood caskets will decompose within 5 years, while wooden caskets will decompose within several decades. Metal and fiberglass caskets can take hundreds or even thousands of years to fully decompose.
Caskets made from either metal or wood will take an average of 50 or more years to decompose underground.
But by 50 years, the tissues will have liquefied and disappeared, leaving behind mummified skin and tendons. Eventually these too will disintegrate, and after 80 years in that coffin, your bones will crack as the soft collagen inside them deteriorates, leaving nothing but the brittle mineral frame behind.
Advanced Decay (3-6 Months)
During the advanced decay stage, also known as black putrefaction or late decay, most soft tissues decompose, leaving behind bones, hair, cartilage, ligaments, and other degradation-resistant tissues.
If the coffin is sealed in a very wet, heavy clay ground, the body tends to last longer because the air is not getting to the deceased. If the ground is light, dry soil, decomposition is quicker. Generally speaking, a body takes 10 or 15 years to decompose to a skeleton.

Phase 4: Putrefaction
This refers to the destruction of soft tissues by bacterial action. It will usually occur 2-3 weeks after death. 3rd visible sign – purge of putrid bloodstained fluid from body orifices.
After two weeks, the body starts to bloat and change its color to red after the blood present in the body starts to decompose. Once the corpse surpasses the fourth week, you can witness liquefaction in the rest of the remains. The teeth and nails also begin to fall during this time frame.
