The Nunnery Scene In this part of
HAMLET: Get thee to a nunnery, go. Farewell. Or, if thou wilt needs marry, marry a fool; wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them. To a nunnery, go, and quickly too.
Hamlet is at first courteous to Ophelia, but suddenly he turns on her: he denies having loved her, asks where her father is, attacks womankind, and tells her she should enter a nunnery.
Summary: Act II, scene i
As Reynaldo leaves, Ophelia enters, visibly upset. She tells Polonius that Hamlet, unkempt and wild-eyed, has accosted her. Hamlet grabbed her, held her, and sighed heavily, but did not speak to her.
Act 3 scene 1
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern report to Claudius, telling him that they don't know why Hamlet is behaving strangely. Claudius then arranges a meeting between Hamlet and Ophelia so that he and Polonius can hide and watch them. They believe this will confirm whether Hamlet is sick with love or not.
Having received her orders from Polonius, she tells him that she wishes to return the tokens of love he has given her. Angrily, Hamlet denies having given her anything; he laments the dishonesty of beauty, and claims both to have loved Ophelia once and never to have loved her at all.
It's the night of the performance of the play, and Hamlet tasks Horatio with gauging Claudius's reaction to the murder scene. As the courtiers gather to watch, Hamlet acts mad once more, insulting Ophelia with all kinds of indecent taunts.
Once Reynaldo has departed, Ophelia arrives. She is upset by a recent interaction she had with Hamlet. He entered her room in a state of undress, grabbed her by the wrist, and would not let go until she physically resisted. He did not speak to her.
After they settle on the plan, Gertrude arrives to inform the king and Laertes that Ophelia is dead. She was found drowned in a brook, surrounded by flowers. Laertes grieves over the loss of his sister, while Claudius frets about his plans.
Hamlet, now free to act, mistakenly kills Polonius, thinking he is Claudius. Claudius sends Hamlet away as part of a deadly plot. After Polonius's death, Ophelia goes mad and later drowns.
Hamlet uses this phrase while speaking to Ophelia in order to emphasize his belief, inspired by his feigned madness or not, that marriage is an institution that needs to be abolished. He tells her that she should become a nun, never marry, and never have children.
In Hamlet Act 4, Scene 5, Ophelia has gone completely mad due to her father's death and Hamlet's departure. She sings and passes out symbolic flowers to the other characters.
Act 3, scene 4 In Gertrude's room, Polonius hides behind a tapestry. Hamlet's entrance so alarms Gertrude that she cries out for help. Polonius echoes her cry, and Hamlet, thinking Polonius to be Claudius, stabs him to death. Hamlet then verbally attacks his mother for marrying Claudius.

Arguably the most famous quotation in the whole of Hamlet, this line begins one of Hamlet's darkest and most philosophical soliloquies.
What subject(s) did he just discuss with her that relate to a nunnery? Hamlet has just discussed Ophelia's chastity, so he suggests she go to a place where women have to be chaste—a “nunnery,” or a convent.
After Polonius's death, Ophelia goes mad and later drowns. Hamlet, who has returned safely to confront the king, agrees to a fencing match with Ophelia's brother, Laertes, who secretly poisons his own rapier.
A funeral procession approaches. Hamlet soon realizes that the corpse is Ophelia's. When Laertes in his grief leaps into her grave and curses Hamlet as the cause of Ophelia's death, Hamlet comes forward. He and Laertes struggle, with Hamlet protesting his own love and grief for Ophelia.
He says that Ophelia's grief stems from her father's death, and that the people have been suspicious and disturbed by the death as well: “muddied, Thick and unwholesome in their thoughts and whispers For good Polonius' death” (IV. v. 77–79).
Ophelia is in grief, certainly, but she is still able to articulate exactly how she's feeling and what she has witnessed. Sadly, this also helps contrast her later descent into madness.
Hamlet is cruel to Ophelia because he has transferred his anger at Gertrude's marriage to Claudius onto Ophelia. In fact, Hamlet's words suggest that he transfers his rage and disgust for his mother onto all women.
Ophelia explains that Hamlet grabbed her wrist and stared at her intensely before leaving. Ophelia fears that Hamlet truly loves her. Polonius suggests they inform Claudius of Hamlet's behavior towards her.
At the beginning of the play, as Hamlet has decided to pretend madness, he pretends he does not love Ophelia anymore, he even rejects her and insults her (Act 3, scene 1). This, of course, means that he has been in love with her before, has let her think that she was loved.
Even though Hamlet has behaved hideously towards Ophelia, she doesn't lament his cruelty towards her—and actually absolves him of it. She instead expresses sadness and pity for Hamlet, demonstrating that in spite of what he believes (or what she has pretended), she does truly have feelings for him.
Some argue it captures Hamlet's feelings of being unequal to the task that has been assigned to him. He feels that trying to set the world to rights would be like committing suicide; the imagery recalls King Canute's hopeless trial of strength, as he tried to hold back the sea.
