There can be a lot of aggression during all of this, with males and females biting each other and even losing legs during mating. And this, too, can vary from species to species. Leiobunum vittatum encounters, for instance, are almost always violent, while L. aldrichi matings are aggressive only about half of the time.
They're social: They sometimes hang out in large groups. They play dead to repulse predators. They excrete smells to repel others. They live two to seven years unless stepped on.
The female can occasionally eat the male if he's not up to scratch, but this behaviour is quite rare in daddy-long-legs spiders.
Daddy longlegs are prone to drying out, he says, so bunching together allows them to create a microenvironment. “It's kind of like body heat, but it's body humidity,” he says. “They are huddling together to maintain that.” Another possible reason could be for protection.
They are passive around humans and like to hide away in dark corners. Despite their relatively harmless appearance, Daddy-Long-Legs spiders are well known for attacking species of spiders that are dangerous to humans.

As a larva, it is a grey grub (also known as a 'leatherjacket') that lives underground, feeding on plants stems and roots.

The body of most adult daddy-longlegs is about 1/16-1/2 inch long, oval with very long legs. Males tend to have smaller bodies than females but they have longer legs. Legs easily break off.

It Can Live Almost Anywhere
Daddy Long Legs loves to make its home in our damp Florida soil, but it can thrive anywhere on earth except Antarctica. Down here, the spiders live as long as two years nesting under rocks and rotten wood.
This means they can often be found in garden lawns, though they prefer more sodden grassland. The average lifespan for a daddy longlegs is between 10 and 15 days.

Tip for preventing daddy long legs: Pour 1 cup white vinegar and 1/3 cup vanilla extract into a spray bottle and shake. Spray areas where the daddy long legs have been spotted indoors and out. The smell will repel the insects.

Crane flies
They go by many names, including daddy long legs, mosquito eaters, and mosquito hawks. But they are not mosquitoes, and they do not eat mosquitoes.
Yet despite their apparent harmlessness, Daddy-long-legs have little trouble catching, wrapping and killing much larger Huntsman spiders. They have even been known to catch Redback spiders and Funnel-web spiders, both of which are far larger and more toxic than the Daddy-long-legs. So, what's their secret?
Daddy longlegs can be found on logs, leaf litter or undisturbed patios mostly in shady, cool, moist places. Unlike spiders they cannot produce silk so they do not build webs. They are very territorial, and the males build nests and wait to attract females.
Daddy long legs eat spiders, earthworms, and other insects. They'll also scavenge for dead insects, decaying plant material and insect eggs if live prey isn't available. Because they like to eat garden pests like aphids, it's beneficial to have them in your garden.
