To continue breathing while sleeping, many aquatic mammals use what's called unihemispheric sleep. That is, they sleep while still swimming, resting only one half of their brain at a time, while the other half remains awake. This means dolphins literally sleep with one eye open.
Dolphins only close one eye when they sleep; the left eye will be closed when the right half of the brain sleeps, and vice versa. This type of sleep is known as unihemispheric sleep as only one brain hemisphere sleeps at a time.
However, certain marine mammals and species of birds show a different sleep behavior, in which one cerebral hemisphere sleeps while the other is awake. In dolphins, eared seals, and manatees, unihemispheric sleep allows them to have the benefits of sleep, breathing, thermoregulation, and vigilance.
As Lilly surmised from cursory observation, the animal's one open eye, linked to the contralateral awake hemisphere of the brain, allows a dolphin to monitor for predators and swim in unison with its companions while the other half of the brain rests.
Crocodiles can sleep with one eye open, according to a study from Australia.

While the majority of dolphins in the US are bred in captivity, they are not domesticated animals. Pushing people into deeper water, head-jerking, and biting causing broken bones, skin abrasions, and other injuries have all been reported with direct contact interactions with dolphins.
There are dozens of photos and YouTube videos of grieflike behavior in dolphins: Some mothers have been seen carrying their dead infants in their mouths or on their backs for a week or longer, even as the body decomposes; a couple adult males have also been seen holding dead calves in their mouths.
DON'T push the animal back out to sea!
Stranded marine mammals may be sick or injured. Returning animals to sea delays examination and treatment and often results in the animal re-stranding in worse condition.
Because dolphins need to tell themselves when to breathe, they can never completely fall asleep. Instead, dolphins only let one half of the brain sleep at a time. Dolphins let the right side of their brain go to sleep while the left side stays awake to control the breathing.
Dolphins sleep with only half of their brains at a time, bestowing them with the uncanny ability to stay constantly alert for at least 15 days in a row.
The unihemispheric sleep patterns allow dolphins to be alert for extended periods of time. A study completed in 2012 by Brian Branstetter and colleagues revealed dolphins can stay alert to the point of completing another task for 15 days straight.
So, how smart are dolphins? Well, it's believed that dolphins are actually the second smartest animal on the planet, next to humans. And yes, even smarter than primates. With a high brain-to-body weight ratio, dolphins are capable of complex problem solving and understanding abstract situations.
Dolphins generally sleep at night, but only for a couple hours at a time; they are often active late at night, possibly matching this alert period to feed on fish or squid, which then rise from the depths.
Bottlenose dolphins, for example, can stay underwater for around 8 to 10 minutes. Even when sleeping, a dolphin's lighter bone structure allows them to sleep just below the surface. This allows them to pop up with their tail flukes every so often whilst asleep to take in the oxygen they need.
Dolphins appear to have a special affection for pregnant women. They have been known to swim up to an expecting woman and make buzzing sounds near her stomach. This is thought to be because dolphins might be able to detect a pregnant woman's developing fetus by using echolocation.
Studies suggest that a variety of dolphins and whale species grieve for their dead. These species can range from a small spinner dolphin to larger animals such as pilot whales and sperm whales.
Perhaps their mating behaviour does not point to what we typically perceive as “love”, but the indication of dolphin friendship and affection certainly demonstrates a capacity for the emotion to some degree. In several surprising instances, dolphins have also shown loving emotions towards humans.
Although dolphins may seem curious, many of their behaviors are often misinterpreted as “friendly” when they actually are, in fact, signs of disturbance or aggression. If a dolphin approaches you in the water, do not engage, pursue, or otherwise interact with the dolphin, and take immediate steps to move away.
Sharks are solitary predators, whereas dolphins travel in groups called pods. Whenever a member of the group is in danger from a shark, the rest of the pod rushes in to defend their buddy. Dolphins have even been known to protect humans in danger of sharks.
Sharks prefer to avoid dolphins. Dolphins are mammals that live in pods and are very clever. They know how to protect themselves. When they see an aggressive shark, they immediately attack it with the whole pod.
Make Eye Contact
Winram recommends keeping eye contact with the shark at all times. “Once we make eye contact, the shark knows we have seen them and therefore taken their advantage away. This generally gives us the advantage and keeps them from slipping into an instinctual mode.”
They react differently when external stimuli are applied while sleeping and while awake. But the bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus show the same reaction in both situations. This indicates that bullfrogs do not sleep. Lithobates catesbeianus is an animal that cannot sleep.
