Though canine romance doesn't necessarily play out like it did for Lady and the Tramp, our good boys and girls can fall in love with us, each other, and other animals, according to some experts. Here's how to tell if your pup is totally smitten.
Your dog might jump on you, lick your face, and they'll definitely wag their tail. Being excited and happy to see you is one way you can be assured they love and miss you. They seek physical contact. This can come in the form of a quick nuzzle, a cuddle, or the famous lean.
Science says yes. Just ask Dr. Berit Brogaaard who told Psychology Today, “Animals also seem capable of experiencing attachment love for each other.” All of those emotions and complex feelings boil down to one word: chemicals.
They appear bonded – show closeness and repeated/continued physical contact; comfort each other, sleep together, etc. They show signs of affection such as cleaning the ears, licking the face, etc. They refuse to leave their kennel without each other.
Their faces light up and they are so delighted to run and play together that it may as well be a “crush”! I tend to notice this much more often with puppies and older dogs and not just because puppies are made out of pure joy and Tigger too. They just seem to be more excited about some older dogs than others.
More attention paid to male dogs: If a female dog in heat sees a male dog, she'll “flirt” with him by exposing and raising her rear in his direction while moving her tail out of the way. Excessive genital licking: A female dog in heat will excessively lick (or “clean”) her genital area.
Affection: There's a pretty good chance that your dog is licking you because it loves you. It's why many people call them "kisses." Dogs show affection by licking people and sometimes even other dogs.
Some of the things to consider are gender, size, and age. Most experts agree that, as a rule, male and female dogs get along better than two females or two males. However, that being said, I've known many households (including my own) that successfully have two of the same gender dogs without any problems at all.
Before settling on a breed, think about the gender of the dog. For the happiest dogs and the safest household, opposite sex dogs almost always do best together. Many same-sex combinations of dogs will fight, sometimes to the death. Those who work out a dominance order may not fare much better.
