Of all 13 countries, Germany was the one where most men sat down “every time” to urinate (40%). Add those who do so “most times” (22%), and you get the result shown on the map: nearly two-thirds are Sitzpinkler (without final “s”: the word is both singular and plural).
In fact—are you sitting down for this—40 percent of German men surveyed by British market research company YouGov always sit down when urinating. Yes, always. That's more than a wee number of men. An additional 22 percent of the German men surveyed plant der hintern on toilet seats most of the time while peeing.
YouGov's data found that German men are the most likely to sit down to pee, with 62% saying they do so "every time" or "most times". Sweds are the second most likely European men to do so. In Germany, these men are known as "sitzpinklers" meaning somebody who sits while urinating.
“A lot of guys sit to pee if they can't fully evacuate their bladder. When you sit down, you can use your abdominal muscles more, and you get your last few squirts out and feel like you've emptied better.” Scientific research backs up Mills too.
“Sitting is probably the most efficient way of doing it,” says Collins. According to Collins, sitting down to urinate can be more beneficial for men as they age, due to a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which affects the vast majority of men over time.

Some men have figured that out. According to a 2011 John Hopkins survey, 35 percent of the 2000 male respondents stated they sat on the toilet to pee. Some of their reasons are to avoid splatter, others are to reduce the sound, to relax, and because it's easier to read sitting down.
Sitting allows the pelvic floor muscles to relax, which reduces pressure on the urethra (the urine tube that carries pee to the outside world) and allows smooth voiding.
One look at this title, and you know it's true: men like to pee outside. It doesn't matter if they're two feet away from a toilet — if they can, they prefer to find a tree (or shrub, or bush, or twig) to do their business.
A pissoir (also known in French as a vespasienne) is a French invention, common in Europe, that provides a urinal in public space with a lightweight structure. The availability of pissoirs aims to reduce urination onto buildings, sidewalks, or streets.

Spending too much time on the toilet causes pressure on your rectum and anus. Because the seat is cut out, your rectum is lower than the rest of your backside. "Often, aiming for the sidewalls is the best approach. If you can reduce angle and stand closer, that is ideal. If you can only do one, stand closer. If standing closer isn't an option, reduce the impact angle."
Some men will urinate standing, while others will pee sitting down. And some men will flit between one and the other (not during urination, of course) depending on their mood. One isn't necessarily better than the other, but whichever one you go for needs to be done properly.
And it happens more frequently later in life. “It's normal for men as we age to get up to go,” says urologist James Ulchaker, MD. “In fact, it's normal for a 60-year-old man to get up once, a 70-year-old man to get up twice and an 80-year-old man to get up three times a night.”
On average, it shouldn't take longer than 30 seconds to urinate, Freedland said. “Once you get going and it takes you a minute to empty your bladder, that's a problem. That's not normal.” How you position your body can also help, experts said.
