What is menstruation? Menstruation is the monthly shedding of the lining of your uterus. Menstruation is also known by the terms menses, menstrual period, menstrual cycle or period.
A lot of physical and emotional changes happen when a woman has her period because of the change in their body's hormone levels. But, no, peeling skin is not a typical symptom.
If there is no fertilized egg, the lining breaks down and bleeds. Then the same process happens all over again. It usually takes about a month for the lining to build up, then break down. That is why most girls and women get their periods around once a month.
How Often Does a Period Happen? Periods usually happen about once a month. But some girls get their periods around every 3 weeks. And others only get a period about once every 6 weeks.

“When the uterus is deprived of oxygen, it releases chemicals that may trigger the pain such as prostaglandins which increases uterine contractions. This type of period pain usually occurs during the second day of your period and is termed as Dysmenorrhea,” adds the expert.
“You'll know these emotional ups and downs are due to PMS if they start consistently a week to two weeks before your period and stop a day or two after menstruation starts,” says New York City gynecologist and fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Carol Livoti, MD.
When pregnancy doesn't occur, the egg is absorbed back into the body and the thick lining in the uterus is shed, this is your period. Then the cycle begins all over again. Day one of your cycle is the first day of your period. This is when your uterus starts shedding the lining it has built up over the last 28 days.
