The idea behind muting someone on Facebook means that you won't receive notifications of new messages that have been sent. You may be wondering, if you mute someone on Facebook Messenger will they know? No, they won't.
Muting People on Facebook
The person you mute won't know you've done so, and both actions are easily reversible. You'll remain friends with them, so no harm done if you change your mind.
You aren't notified when you're muted, and you can't go anywhere to see a list of who has muted you. But there are some subtle signs you can look for. If a person who used to often like or comment on your posts seems to have suddenly gone silent, you may have been muted.
Mute is a feature that allows you to remove an account's Tweets from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking that account. Muted accounts will not know that you've muted them and you can unmute them at any time.
When group members are muted, they can still view content in your group, but they can't engage with such or post their own updates.
Keep in mind that muting someone's story is different from unfriending or unfollowing them. When you mute someone's story, you will still remain friends with them, and you'll still see their posts in your Feed. Learn more about stories on Facebook.
There's a huge difference between being muted on Facebook Messenger and being completely blocked. When you're muted, your messages will still go through to the intended person... they'll just go through quietly. However, when you're blocked, you won't be able to send any messages at all.
To confirm if you have been muted, you send a message using another Facebook profile. If the message is delivered and the recipient reads it, then there is a high chance that he/she has muted you on messenger. Alternatively, you should try opening the app on another device.
The mute button cuts off the microphone on your phone. This means that you can still hear the caller but they cannot hear you. As the caller will then have no indication that the call is still live, the mute button should only be used for short pauses in conversation.
You can also mute someone's profile. You'll still follow them, but you won't get a notification every time they post or comment.
Open your Facebook friends list or use the search bar at the top to search for people you want to mute. On their profile, tap the Friends button and choose the Unfollow option to mute them.
To quickly recap the main differences, think of a block as an absolute and mute as a partial solution. A blocked user can never see your profile unless they log out and use a different account. A muted user sees everything you tweet or retweet. On the other hand, you do not see their posts on your feed.
When you ignore a conversation, you won't be notified when the person messages you directly, and the conversation will move to your connection requests. When you ignore a conversation, the person won't be notified.
Mute vs.
Muting someone silences all upcoming messages and calls from that person on Messenger. You can still see the latest incoming messages in the main chats tab. At the same time, restricting someone hides the conversation completely.
When you Mute a thread, the future messages from that particular thread continue to appear in the Messenger Inbox. In case of Ignore, the thread moves to Message Requests and disappears from the main Inbox as mentioned before. The new messages will no longer appear on the Messenger home screen.
▶️ Restrict someone on Instagram: you limit someone's access to your profile, comments aren't public and they won't be able to see if you're online. ▶️ Mute someone on Instagram: you hide the other person's content from yourself.
When you add someone to your Restricted list, you'll still be friends with them on Facebook, but they'll only be able to see your public information (example: your posts and profile info you choose to make public) and posts you tag them in.
Once the friend's name comes up, tap through to their profile page. On the friend's profile page click on the button labeled Friends just beside the Message button and then tap on Take a break.
Unfollow a Facebook Friend
Click the ellipsis next to any of the person's posts, then click Unfollow. You'll remain friends with the person but won't see any more of their posts.
Tap in the top right of Facebook. Tap Settings & privacy, then tap Settings. Scroll down to Audience and visibility section and tap the option you want to change the privacy for.
Important: The person you block won't receive a notification that they've been blocked, and you can still call, message, or email a blocked contact without unblocking them.
