Your surgeon will make a cut on the line of the areola (the darker area around your nipple) and a vertical cut underneath your areola. They will remove excess skin and reshape your breast tissue. Your surgeon will lift your nipple so it is in a higher position.
The truth is that the nipples are kept on what we call a pedicle – a blood supply with an artery and a vein to allow the nipple and areola to get blood and oxygen. So, the nipple and areola are moved upward with breast tissue and soft tissue surrounding it. The entire mound gets elevated. There is no “cutting off”!
Occasionally after a breast procedure, patients will experience an extra or hypersensitivity to the nipple area, which can be bothersome. This is believed to be secondary to a minor injury to the nerve to the nipple and is generally temporary but can take several months to resolve.
While it's unlikely that you'll experience a loss of feeling or sensitivity in your nipple after breast lift surgery, it can still happen in rare cases. As mentioned, any numbness is usually temporary and will return over time.
As with size, it is rare for the position of the nipples and areolas to change significantly after breast augmentation. If one nipple sits a bit lower than the other, it will likely stay that way after surgery, too. If one nipple points slightly to the left, it will remain that way after surgery.
Your breast lift incisions should begin to close and heal within the first 1 – 2 weeks after surgery, during which time it is important to keep the area clean and not submerge the incisions. Once they have fully closed, the scar should begin to fade from red to pink and ultimately to flesh or white tone.
Most women will return to normal nipple sensation within a few months of surgery. Very rarely, nipple sensation will not return. This doesn't happen often and is more common with larger implants, breast reductions, or breast lifts. Some incision types are more prone to sensation loss than others.
The women reported an average decrease of approximately one cup size, for instance going from a D to a C. All of the women were wearing the same brand of bra, so there were no variations based upon manufacturer sizing differences.
Lifting Your Arms vs.
Lifting your arms over your head can place strain on incision sites which in some cases can cause wound breakdown and delay recovery. This can worsen the appearance of breast reduction scars and damage the final results of your surgery.
Remember that a breast lift does not slow the aging process. Eventually, the breasts will drop years after a breast lift simply because the aging process has continued.
A vampire breast lift (VBL) augments your breasts without surgery. Providers inject platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to improve skin texture and make your breasts appear fuller. Side effects are minimal, but may include bruising, swelling and tenderness, and there's no downtime.
Some patients find that their breast lift results last for well over 15 years while others may seek minor cosmetic alterations sooner. On average, breast lift results last for 10 to 15 years.
Typically, most patients will be required to wear a compression bra during their initial part of recovery (two weeks after surgery). At that point, you can switch to a compression sports bra but make sure to avoid anything with an underwire. This can be worn for another two weeks, day and night.
Like any major surgery, a breast lift poses a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. It's also possible to have an allergic reaction to the surgical tape or other materials used during or after the procedure.
Cons of a Breast Lift:
There may be temporary or permanent loss of sensation in the nipples or breasts. Scarring from a breast lift is more significant than other breast surgeries because the procedure requires the removal of excess skin tissue and repositioning.
Most women report feeling much more capable of exercising and maintaining their weight after the operation. It's common for women to lose between 10 and 20 pounds in the months following surgery.
You only lose about two pounds of breast tissue in the procedure, though the effect on your appearance is often dramatic.
Zingers are the term used to describe the shooting, burning, sharp, intermittent sensations that women experience after a breast augmentation. This nerve hypersensitivity feels almost like a mini electric shock. Zingers only last a second or two but for women who aren't expecting them it can be quite scary.
The nipple will always be erect after NSM. Loss of sensation: While the nipple/areola remains, the nerves that control feeling and sensation in this area are removed with the rest of the breast tissue. This means that you cannot feel the nipple area, or it being touched.
While discomfort or pain after surgery is to be expected, women usually mention that breast reduction or breast lift surgery is a lot less painful than what they expected. Generally people comment that it's more 'discomfort or pain limited to the incisions', rather than pain within the breasts or over the chest.
It is critical that patients wear their supportive unwired medical bra at all times for the first 1 – 2 weeks after breast lift surgery. At this point, you may be able to sleep without a bra, though most patients find it more comfortable to continue wearing an unwired bra around the clock for several more weeks.
A breast lift will enhance the appearance of your breasts but is considered major surgery.
Don't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk (including your children), as you could strain your healing breasts and cause swelling. Along the same lines, don't push anything heavy, like a stroller or a large grocery cart. Don't smoke after surgery, as it can interfere with your body's ability to heal.
A sports bra rarely has a deep enough underband to provide the support you need after surgery, nor does it allow for any post-operative swelling, which means it can quickly cut in and could restrict lymphatic drainage.
