There are no inheritance or estate taxes in Australia. However, you may have tax obligations for the assets you inherit: capital gains tax may apply if you dispose of an asset inherited from a deceased estate. income tax applies as usual to any dividends or rental income from shares or property you inherited.
You will not pay tax if you inherit cash, shares, property or gifts unless you are advised by the executor. It is the responsibility of the executor to finalise any tax obligations from the deceased estate prior to administering the estate and distributing assets.
According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), federal estate tax returns are only required for estates with values exceeding $12.06 million in 2022 (rising to $12.92 million in 2023). If the estate passes to the spouse of the deceased person, no estate tax is assessed. 318 Taxes for 2022 are paid in 2023.
Typically, the estate will pay any estate tax owed, with the beneficiaries receiving assets from the estate free of income taxes (see exception for retirement assets in the chart below). As a beneficiary, if you later sell or earn income from inherited assets, there may be income tax consequences.
Tell Centrelink
This is really important. You must tell Centrelink with 14 days of receiving the lump sum. If you don't, you could be overpaid, and you will need to repay the money to Centrelink.
(b) $30,000 over 5 financial years – noting that this can't include more than $10,000 in a single financial year. If you make any gifts over the above limits Centrelink will count the excess in your assets test and also include it in your income test.
Avoid making purchases that require long-term payments or change your lifestyle to be more expensive, such as a boat that'll need upkeep and storage. Once your inheritance is gone, these purchases could leave you worse off than you were before.
$500,000 is a big inheritance. It could have a significant impact on a person's financial situation, depending on how it is managed and utilized. As you can see here, there are many complex, moving parts involving several financial disciplines.
Deposit the money into a safe account
Your first action to take when receiving a lump sum is to deposit the money into an FDIC-insured bank account. This will allow for safekeeping while you consider how to make the best use of your inheritance.

In general, a large inheritance is considered to be a sum of money or assets that is significantly larger than the individual's typical annual income. The cap is $17,000 per recipient for an annual gift in the 2023 tax year. You are responsible for making multiple gifts totalling $17,000 to people of your choice without paying the gift tax. Inheritance law in Australia
When no Will has been made, the law most often grants assets to the partner of the person who has died. If there are children, then some of the estate may also go to them. There are also circumstances in which the estate will be apportioned to domestic or de factor partners.
If you decide you want to put money from an inheritance into your super, you usually can, by making a voluntary contribution or a spouse contribution. There are limits on how much you can contribute to your super per year, so make sure the amount you contribute to your super is within these limits.
Straightforward estates are often wound up in less than 6 months. Others can take more than a year. It depends on: the complexity of the Will.
A 2019 study published by Wealth-X found that around 68% of those with a net worth of $30 million or more made it themselves. Further, a second study by Fidelity Investments found that 88% of all millionaires are self-made, meaning they did not inherit their wealth.
An alternative to a savings account is to invest your lump sum. Investments can offer attractive returns, but the value of an investment can also drop so you may end up with less than you started. A stocks and shares ISA is a way of investing where you can earn a return tax-free.
Once the Child Reaches Mid-Life, Give It Away, But Don't Forget These Exceptions. As child turns 40 to 45 years old, giving them their full inheritance can be the better move. It's a simplified estate plan, less costly to manage, and there may no longer be a need for the benefits of a trust that I've mentioned.
For pension purposes, you are allowed to give a total of $10,000 every financial year with a total of $30,000 over five years. Gifts exceeding that will be counted as an asset and subject to deeming under the income test for five years from the date of the gift.
How Centrelink knows your assets without you telling them. Centrelink has multiple data-sharing agreements with government organisations like the ATO, Medicare, PayG and more. This helps them to maintain a view of your assets, and in certain circumstances they may apply additional scrutiny to individuals.
