Angel (David Boreanaz) is resurrected mysteriously by the unseen Powers That Be. While Buffy is happy to have Angel back, he seems to have lost much of his sanity in Hell. Buffy helps Angel recover but, having seen Angel's demonic side, Buffy's friends distrust him until he saves them from a monster.
After killing a nest of vampires, Illyria revealed to the group that Angel was no longer a vampire, leaving Connor feeling angry and betrayed.
Unknown to Buffy, Angel is released from his curse and turned back into the infamous Angelus. The gang eventually find out that there was a second aspect to the gypsy curse; if Angel ever were to experience a moment of true happiness, he would lose his soul and revert to his former evil self.
In the season finale, neophyte witch Willow (Alyson Hannigan) manages to restore Angel's soul at the last moment, but Buffy is forced to kill him to save the world from Acathla, and Angel is sent to hell.
Angel/Angelus
Angel lost his soul twice: first, when he slept with Buffy Summers, and again, due to a spell.
In the episode "I Will Remember You," Angel becomes human, much to his and Buffy's emotional and physical satisfaction. But, in typical Joss Whedon fashion, this happy moment is quickly flipped into something awful and tragic.
A Hole In The World
Upon discovering that releasing the spirit would kill thousands, they had no choice than to allow Fred to die. Her heroic sacrifice remains the show's most heartbreak moment and one of its saddest episodes. Fred's death hit Wesley the hardest, as they had just become a couple.
Angel had to strip himself of his soul and revert to his evil alter ego in order to defeat it, after "Cordelia" had a vision of Angelus facing the Beast in the past which Angel did not recall. As Angelus, he lures Faith to the Beast, only to betray and kill him, not knowing it would bring back the sun.
Angelus terrorizes Willow and the Gang at school, emotionally tormenting Buffy. Later, as they discuss Angel's transformation in the library, Buffy realises that having sex with Angel is what caused him to turn evil.
History. Only two vampires had survived the Killer of the Dead, the second being Angel, who was cured by the blood of Buffy Summers after being infected with a poisoned arrow by Faith Lehane.
1. Spike. We know that Team Angel fans are probably screaming at their computers right now, but hear us out. There are plenty of reasons Spike was the most powerful vampire in the Buffyverse.
It ended with him giving up his humanity so that he can help keep Buffy safe and so that he can help dave others. Only he's burdened with the memory of that day; Buffy doesn't know it ever happened.
Buffy finally reveals the truth about actually being in Heaven to everyone, albeit, after being forced to do so by Sweet. Before this, Spike is the only one to know that the Scoobies had pulled her out of Heaven with their resurrection spell, being told so in the episode "After Life."
Feeling overwhelming affection and sympathy for her, Angel was motivated to start his path as champion and help her in her fight against evil. A year later, he moved to Sunnydale. When reflecting over this, Angel eventually admitted to Buffy he fell in love with her the moment he saw her.
"There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb"
In the season 2 finale of Angel, the Angel Investigations team arrives back to the hotel to find a grief-stricken Willow sitting, waiting for them with some bad news: Buffy is dead.
He gives Buffy the amulet and offers to be the one to use it, but then finds out about Buffy's relationship with Spike, and that he's no longer the only vamp around with a soul. Bit of a tough visit for Angel. Spike ends up using the amulet, sacrificing himself to save the day and defeat The First.
Angel will not lose his soul again until the episode "Awakening" on Angel.
Whether a person views Angel's ending as a cliffhanger or not, and regardless of if they read the comics, the series finale of Angel does work as a satisfying conclusion to the entire arc of the series, and in particular the character of Angel himself. Viewers might not get to see the battle, but that's not the point.
Why Angel Ended After Season 5. David Fury, one of the show's producers, spoke on the real reason behind Angel's cancellation in 2004: Joss Whedon pushed the network for an early renewal, and they didn't go for it.
Season two, episode 14 – Innocence
