Services Australia will automatically assess you for Rent Assistance if you pay rent and you're getting certain payments. You'll need to give Services Australia proof of your rent arrangements to get Rent Assistance.
We'll check if you can get Rent Assistance as part of your claim. If you've got a formal tenancy agreement, we'll ask you to provide a copy as part of your claim. If you don't have a formal tenancy agreement, if your claim is granted, we'll post you a Rent Certificate. You'll need to complete it and return it to us.
*Note: - Rent assistance cannot be backdated. Payments can only be paid from the payday following notification that you are renting.
Get your receipt
We'll give you a receipt ID to let you know your Rent Assistance Review was successful. Make a note of this number for your records. You don't need to contact us unless we ask you to. If you need to verify your accommodation details, we'll send you a Rent Certificate in the mail.

You need ask your lessor or agent for written permission if you want someone to come and live with you, then. You can ask the lessor or agent to add the new person to your tenancy agreement as an approved occupant. Your lessor or agent should not unreasonably refuse permission for someone to move in with you.
The review could mean any of the following: your payment changes to be more or less than you get now. you're no longer eligible for Rent Assistance. you need to pay back money because of overpayment.
you move house. your income changes. your marital status changes. the number of dependent children in your care changes.
Private rent, board or lodgings
Some examples are: living in a rented house or unit, living in a boarding house, hostel or private hotel. paying rent, board or lodgings in the family home.
If they lodged an intent to claim and then lodged their completed claim within 14 days, their payments could be backdated to the date they first made contact with Centrelink, i.e. when they lodged their intent to claim.
You can request a Statement of Debt for any 5 year period going back to 1998.
Home visits
Centrelink may also visit your home unexpectedly, but this is not common. They may do this if they are already investigating and believe that you are being dishonest. If a Centrelink officer comes to your home, you: do not have to let them in (unless they are with a police officer who has a warrant)
