Centrelink has very wide powers to thoroughly investigate deposits that have been made into your account. For example, it has the power to obtain your information from other government agencies as well as accessing information from banks, building societies and credit union accounts.
A. There are many anecdotal stories on whether Centrelink can and does check bank accounts and the upshot is that Centrelink does not have the power to spot check individual's bank accounts. However, it does utilise data-matching with other Government agencies to weed out cases of possible welfare fraud.
For your Special Benefit claim you must provide bank statements for the last 3 months for all accounts you have. This includes any overseas accounts. If you have a partner, we'll also require bank statements for all accounts held by them.
Once Centrelink has suspected a person has committed a Centrelink fraud, in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police (AFP), they may first invite the person for an interview or go to their house for investigation. Alternatively, they will launch an investigation into the matter without notice to the person.
Centrelink has very broad powers to demand information from any individual or organisation. For example, they can require your bank or your employer to give details of your financial transactions, or any other personal details that are relevant to your Centrelink entitlements.
You can request a Statement of Debt for any 5 year period going back to 1998. You can make more than one request.
If you have defrauded Centrelink, you may be charged under section 134.2 – obtaining a financial advantage by deception. If you are found guilty, the maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment. You may instead, or also, receive a fine between $10,000 and $100,000 and be made to repay the benefit to Centrelink.
Centrelink will investigate if they suspect you have received unentitled payments. Once Centrelink decide to investigate, Centrelink can require your bank or employer to disclose your financial details relevant to Centrelink purposes. This process can take week to months.
But even if there is a mistake, people must repay incorrect payments. If we find enough evidence of criminal behaviour, we may take further steps. We may refer cases to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. This may lead to criminal charges and jail.

You have savings or other money
If you or your partner have liquid assets over certain limits, you may have to wait 1 to 13 weeks. Liquid assets are any funds readily available to you or your partner. This includes money owed by your or your partner's employer. Read about liquid assets waiting periods.
If you don't report and you're meant to, we won't pay you. You can report online up to 13 days after your reporting date. If you're more than 13 days late, you need to call us on your regular payment line.
Can Anyone Check My Bank Statement? No. Unless you give out your account number, banks do not release information regarding your bank statement to unknown third parties without your consent.

If you lie to Centrelink about your circumstances, you may receive benefits that you would otherwise not be entitled to. Courts view Centrelink fraud very seriously and if found guilty you could face a sentence of imprisonment and will be required to repay the debt to Centrelink.
Not reporting your full income – The ATO looks at your full income, which may include bank interest, dividends, trust distributions, and other sources. You need to account for all of your income on your tax return, not just your salary or wage. Fail to do so, and you could trigger an audit.
If you ask a previous employer for a separation certificate and they refuse, you should let Centrelink know. You can ask Centrelink to consider other ways of checking your details so your claim can be approved. Centrelink may agree to contact your previous employer to check your details.
We may notice you've been overpaid after you tell us of a change or complete a review. Once we know you've been overpaid, we check if you have a debt that you need to repay. You may not need to repay money if: we can offset the overpayment by deducting it from your next payment.
Assets for an eligible single JobSeeker recipient can not exceed $280,000 for homeowners, or $504,500 for non-homeowners. For eligible recipients in a couple, combined assets can not exceed $419,000 for homeowners, or $643,500 for non-homeowners.
