In Diana Gabaldon's novels,
Claire learns why Jamie married Laoghaire in Outlander Book 3, Chapter 37.
He makes eye contact with Claire while kissing Laoghaire. The object of his desire is clear and she is not the woman with her arms wrapped around him. This moment could be a thousand things, but it isn't just a kiss. It might be Laoghaire's thank you to Jamie for taking her punishment.
Nonetheless, Jamie did have sexual relations with Laoghaire in a bid to make the marriage work but ultimately failed and so the couple separated. Additionally, it seems Jamie was acting of out duty to his new wife however past trauma meant Laoghaire was unable to reciprocate.
Despite the fact that Laoghaire isn't a very common name, Brianna hasn't realized who she is until she reveals that her mother's name is Claire Fraser. Laoghaire goes completely nuts.
After Jamie returns from prison and indentured servitude, Jamie's sister, Jenny, arranges a marriage between Laoghaire and her grieving brother. The marriage, however, is a failure, and Jamie leaves Laoghaire.
Jamie has a son named William Ransom with Geneva Dunsany, who died during William's birth. Jamie also has two stepdaughters, Marsali MacKimmie Fraser and Joan MacKimmie, from his marriage to his second wife, Laoghaire MacKenzie.
As ambitious and enormous as the world of Outlander is, it's the characters and their relationships that make the story so compelling. At its heart is the love shared between Claire and Jamie, two people who ultimately would not let time or distance—even hundreds of years—keep them apart.
During An Echo in the Bone/Written in My Own Heart's Blood, Claire marries for the third time. This time it's to Lord John Grey.

On what he thinks will be their last night together, Jamie touches Claire—and when she tries to reciprocate, he declines.
