The Yellowstone prequel never clarified whether Elsa (Isabel May) and Ennis (Eric Nelsen) consummating their relationship in 1883 season 1, episode 5 “The Fangs of Freedom" resulted in Elsa getting pregnant.
Sam. A Comanche warrior who the Duttons met along the wagon trail in 1883, Sam professed to have taken his name from the man who killed his wife. He later began a romance with Elsa Dutton, and the two married without official ceremony.
And because this is one of the few shows in which that phrase might be taken literally, allow me to clarify: Elsa gets married in Sunday's episode. The groom? Handsome Sam, the Comanche man she met [checks notes] last episode.
If you've watched the series (and read the headline), you know that Elsa ultimately passes away from an infected arrow wound in Montana, leading the family to settle in the place of her death. It was an incredibly powerful scene, and even as the actors performing it, McGraw and Hill said the whole thing was rough.
Indeed, as there are no condoms or any other reliable form of birth control in the frontier, there's a real possibility that Ennis really did impregnate Elsa. Sadly, before 1883 could even drop any clues that Elsa was pregnant, Ennis died in the next episode while Elsa died during the finale.
Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) is John and Elsa's brother in 1923, and the character who is currently hunting lions abroad. Spencer was apparently born sometime after James and Margaret settled in Montana and was not featured as a baby back in 1883.
Yellowstone fans know that Duttons have been buried in the same spot in Montana for over a century. The Dutton family cemetery makes more sense after 1883 revealed that Elsa was the first person to be buried on the land.
The episode ends with Elsa and Sam making a dramatic public declaration of their love, which is met with disapproval from some of the others on the wagon train.
Ennis and James's daughter Elsa were first introduced on the journey and took a liking to each other. The two sparked a romance and had promised themselves to one another. In episode five, they consummated their relationship and planned their future together.
However, despite getting the parents' approval, Sam and Elsa do not marry, at least not in a traditional sense. During her conversation with Margaret, Elsa states that she believes God has sent Sam into her life, and she already considers him a husband.
Sam and Elsa did get their happily ever after, at least in Elsa's afterlife — the joys surround her that she didn't get enough of in this life, and she'll be met by her loved ones when their time comes.
The two then ride off where Sam tells Elsa that he chose his name after a man named Sam killed his wife; he wanted to take the man's name after taking the man's life. (Sam killed Sam.) Sam gives Elsa a nickname, “Lightning Yellow Hair.”
1883 ended its first season in brutal fashion. The Yellowstone prequel starring Faith Hill and Tim McGraw wrapped its 10-episode season by killing off both their onscreen daughter, Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), and Pinkerton agent Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott).
Meanwhile, fan-favorite Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) made good on his promise to see the Pacific Ocean so his late wife could “use [his] eyes to see the world” — then promptly shot himself.
Love life. Elsa took a liking to Ennis, one of the cowhands that went along with the wagon train she travels with. Soon they both stated their love for each other and eventually their relationship even got the blessing of the skeptical James Dutton.
The Dutton family's story continued with more unexpected twists and turns in the latest episode of 1883 on Paramount+.
Hours after the season finale episode of 1883 premiered on Paramount+, LaMonica Garrett took to Twitter to indicate that, yes, it's true: Thomas, his character, and Noemi, played by Gratiela Brancusi, really did get to happily-ever-after in Oregon with Noemi's boys.
One of the Comanche introduces himself to Elsa as Sam, a name he took from the man who killed his wife. The two race their horses; Elsa wins and Sam nicknames her "Lightning With The Yellow Hair".
1883's ending - explained from a historic point of view - painted a stark picture of how those who were part of the Westward Expansion survived, loved, and died along the Oregon Trail. Elsa Dutton surrendered to death and picked the spot in Paradise Valley where he wanted James to bury her.
1883, which concluded its first season in February 2022, featured Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as the central Duttons, who claim the infamous patch of Montana wild known as the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch after the tragic death of their daughter, Elsa.
Spencer Dutton
The younger brother of John Dutton Sr. (and the youngest child of 1883's James and Margaret Dutton, born after that show's conclusion) Spencer served in WWI and remains haunted by his experiences.
