As Creator, God knows exactly what it takes to keep the human body in excellent health, and because health depends so much on our life-style, God is intimately concerned about how we live. No wonder, then, that the Bible gives so much sound instruction on how to maintain our health.
Our bodies are so important that the Lord calls them temples of God (see 1 Corinthians 3:16–17; 6:19–20). Our bodies are holy. Because our bodies are important, our Father in Heaven wants us to take good care of them. He knows that we can be happier, better people if we are healthy.
God is very pro-body. He created our bodies and will resurrect them. He wants us to honour Him by taking care of our bodies. Because God wants us to take care of our bodies the Bible affirms, “Physical training is good…” (1 Timothy 4:8).
Jesus in his ministry on earth showed that He cared about the physical needs of people. God gave us all individual gifts to serve, help, and teach people. Jesus saw people as individuals, and addressing their needs in spiritual and or physical ways.
In addition, 1 Corinthians 6 tells us that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit which should be cared for in honor of the God who created you.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 In-Context
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
2 Corinthians 7:1
1 Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” This verse reminds us that our bodies are not our own, but rather they belong to God.
As Founder and Creator of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them, God holds the rights to all of it. That includes even us – our bodies, our minds, and our lives. Even when we had become slaves to sin, he redeemed us, paying with his Son's life.
That's right — a veritable temple. In fact, the apostle Paul comes right out and says so. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV), he asks, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.
1 Timothy 4:8 states: "For while physical training is of some value, godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." While it is important to note that Scripture is clear that godliness is more valuable, it does acknowledge that physical exercise has value.
So you must honor God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT). How do you honor God with your body? It's simple: You take care of it. “Sanctify your body” basically means “get in shape.” If you want God to use you, you've got to get in shape.
He replied, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick' (Matthew 9:12). Jesus recognised that sick people need doctors. He did not condemn using doctors and 'earthly remedies'. Yes, Jesus performed many healing miracles while he was on Earth.
Matthew 6:25
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothes?”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” These lines speak to taking care of your body. You should not harm that which was created by God in His image.
"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb-bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food." In the second chapter of Genesis (2:16-17) vegetarianism is re-affirmed as people's spiritually proper diet.
Every Christian says, “Yes, the Savior has given me a new heart!” He will also give you a new body. It will be the completion of his redeeming work in your life.
Our old, physical body will be left behind; our new, spiritual body will be “raised up.” The Scripture reveals that our resurrection body will be a spiritual body perfectly suited to be with the Lord forever in Heaven. The apostle Paul agreed with Jesus' words and timing according to 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 (ESV).
[17] Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? [18] But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
Christianity has always been opposed to dualistic models devaluing the human body. The human person is created in God's image to be resurrected on the last day; his or her body is worthy of respect.
The Bible says they “appeared in glorious splendor” (Luke 9:30). This is what our bodies will be like when we get to heaven: transformed into something glorious.
Yet, throughout the Bible, prayer and worship happen through bodies. Worshipers not only lift their hands, but also stand, kneel, bow down with faces to the ground, sing, and shout. Biblically worshiping God includes the inner person, but, for the most part, gets expressed physically.
The Lord promises in Jeremiah 33:6 that He will provide health and healing. He is our source of health and we are able to depend on His word for strength and restoration. Proverbs 4:20-22 also encourages us to pay attention to the word of God.
Isaiah 3:24 says, “...instead of fragrance there will be a stench...” It is certainly better to smell good before God than to stink in His presence. Presenting ourselves as a living sacrifice to Him is much better than the smell of death.
“Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? “He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully” (Psalm 24:3–4).
