All Kokiri have companion fairies, but because Link is actually a Hylian, he never received one until Navi joins him near the beginning of the events of the game. In gameplay terms, Navi functions primarily as a guide to Link that helps the player learn the controls and advance in the game.
Link's Fairy Companions
In Phantom Hourglass, Link obtains a companion Fairy named Ciela. Two other Fairies, Leaf and Neri, also come to his aid later on. Each of the three Fairies represents one of the Goddesses (courage, power, wisdom) and give Link a unique power when equipped.
The Fairy Spell is a spell learned in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. The Fairy Spell allows Link to become a fairy. While Link is unable to attack enemies in his fairy form, it does provide him with a number of helpful advantages.

Although Link is depicted as a male character, Aonuma said that he wanted him to be gender neutral. He said that in Ocarina of Time: "I wanted the player to think 'Maybe Link is a boy or a girl'. If you saw Link as a guy, he'd have more of a feminine touch.
That is until you take Link's Awakening into consideration. Link's Awakening heavily implies that Link has feelings for Zelda, and it's done all through Marin.
Although it may seem like Link himself is reincarnating, it's actually the spirit of courage, otherwise known as the Spirit of the Hero. This seems to hold true for the other two as well. Because of this, Link has no memories of his previous reincarnations, and each game feels like a 'new' Link.
However, perhaps more significantly, it seems that Skyward Sword's ending explains why the first Link wasn't the last. With his dying breath, Demise lays a curse on Link and Zelda that binds him to them forever. All future incarnations are forced to deal with Demise's eternal vengeance.
It was development error. Essentially what was done was that when the Bunny Link sprite was created, it just used the regular Link's palette even though it had its own palette like all NPCs and enemies do too.
Although romance isn't new for Link and Zelda, it wasn't until Skyward Sword when the franchise would finally decide to give the two a genuine, undeniable love story.

Ultimately, Link is Schrodinger's silent protagonist. He doesn't have any voice lines, but each entry indicates that he does talk, despite never hearing him do so. This paradoxical characterization helps players insert themselves into Link's shoes but also gives him a personality, despite not being designed with one.
Many see Link as an explicitly trans character, while others see him as more genderfluid—and that ambiguity is part of what makes his character so compelling and euphoric. It's truly beautiful to see so much trans joy in one place.
The official Prima Guide says that Link is supposed to be 17, and Eiji Aonuma backs that up. However, during a later interview with Nintendo Dream, Aonuma agreed with the interviewer that Link was actually 16.
