If you don't want to see someone's posts in your feed, see their stories at the top of your feed or see incoming messages they send you, there are multiple ways you can mute someone on Instagram. Instagram won't let them know you muted them. Keep in mind that muting someone is different from unfollowing them.
Muting on Instagram allows you to hide posts from specific accounts without having to unfollow them.
Some important things to know about mute:
Muted accounts can follow you and you can follow muted accounts. Muting an account will not cause you to unfollow them. Muting an account does not impact the account's ability to send you a Direct Message.
Muting someone on Instagram is basically taking a break from them and their content. You keep following them, but none of their content will appear in your news feed. The person that you muted will still be able to see all of your content as normal, and you can still search for and visit each others' profiles.
Send a DM.
If you send the person a DM and you don't get a response after a period of time while they were active, then they may have muted your messages. They won't be notified of any direct contact if you have been muted.
Basically, it's like unfollowing them without clicking on the unfollow button. Instagram won't show you anything from that user and, of course, they won't get any sort of notification that they've been muted.

You can see theirs, but they won't see yours. Muting their story is just “YOU” not wanting to see their story.
He would mute you to compromise between deleting you from his list and keeping it polite. Muting is a middle term. He doesn't get to go to the emotional intensity of removing you and making you sad (he doesn't get to hurt you) and he doesn't have to hurt himself by seeing your updates.

Muting is the softer approach for a user you might just find a bit annoying but don't want to unfollow. Meanwhile, the block option on Instagram would be best utilized when someone is harassing you, sending spam, or bombarding you with direct messages that you don't want to receive.
Unfollowing someone means you will no longer see their content in your feed. If they have a public account then you may still be able to see what they post by visiting their profile directly. If you choose to unfollow someone on Instagram they will not receive a notification saying that you have done this.

Simply put, muting someone on Twitter is like a more polite version of blocking them. Same like blocking, they will not be notified that you did it. You will clear your feed of their tweets and retweets and they will still see your retweets and tweets. They will also be able to follow you and send you direct messages.
If you post something that a follower disagrees with, they may unfollow you rather than keep you in their timeline. This includes political posts, religious posts, or sponsored content they don't agree with. People tend to follow people who are like them, or who they want to be like.
The soft block option is much more convenient way of achieving the same results in a less awkward way. Once you 'soft block' someone, they will not be notified of the action. They will still be able to see your tweets and direct message you. But to see your tweets on their timeline, they will have to refollow you.
In order to game the system and try to accumulate a lot of followers, people engage in a follow-and-unfollow scheme.
