Olive oil is thought to help break up hardened wax in the ear canal while hydrating the skin of the ear. Putting olive oil in the ear does not appear to be harmful, but there is little evidence that it can help treat earwax or ear infections.
Olive oil is generally safe to use in small quantities in the ear. However, people with a ruptured eardrum should never put olive oil or other substances in the ear. Irrigating the ear with olive oil can cause side effects such as itching, outer ear infections, dizziness, and skin irritation.
If it does not and blocks your ear, put 2 to 3 drops of medical grade olive or almond oil in your ear 3 to 4 times a day. Do this for 3 to 5 days. It is recommended you use a dropper while lying your head on one side for a few minutes to let the oil work its way through your ear canal(s).
Antibiotics are a medicine prescribed by your doctor. If you're dealing with an ear infection caused by bacteria, you'll likely need antibiotics. They are the best way of quickly getting rid of a bacterial infection and preventing it from spreading to other parts of the body.
Put 2 or 3 drops of ordinary olive oil down the ear 2 or 3 times a day for 2-3 weeks. This softens the wax so that it then runs out of its own accord without harming the ear. You can continue for any length of time, but 3 weeks is usually enough.
Pop Your Ears
But if an infection or irritation is present, that tube can swell. This causes fluid to back up. Popping your ears can help open the eustachian tube, allowing fluid to drain. The simplest way to pop your ears is to yawn, chew, or swallow.
Although the risks are low, there is a small chance (thought to be around 1 in 1000) of complications occurring with ear syringing- such as a perforated ear drum, middle ear infection, external canal infection or causing ringing in the ear (tinnitus).
The use of an olive oil spray (such as Earol) should be sprayed into the affected ear. The recommended dosage is 2 sprays per affected ear, twice a day for 4 weeks. These sprays mist a coating of olive oil over the wax.
Lie on your side and place a large ball of cotton wool (not cotton buds) into the ear canal gently so as not to allow the oil to escape. Stay on your side for at least 2-3 minutes. It is not necessary to warm the oil.

This can happen for brief periods during air travel, but also due to allergies, sinus or ear infections, or other respiratory viruses (including COVID-19). Sudden onset of muffled hearing in one ear may signal an urgent problem requiring prompt treatment to prevent or reduce possible hearing loss.
The symptoms of an ear infection in adults are: Earache (either a sharp, sudden pain or a dull, continuous pain) A sharp stabbing pain with immediate warm drainage from the ear canal. A feeling of fullness in the ear.
The ear infection may start shortly after a cold. Sudden drainage of yellow or green fluid from the ear may mean the eardrum has ruptured. All acute ear infections involve fluid behind the eardrum. At home, you can use an electronic ear monitor to check for this fluid.
While most cases of ear infections clear up on their own, there are a handful of at-home remedies that can help, like applying a hot or cold compress, using over-the-counter pain relievers or adjusting your sleep position.
Most ear infections clear up within 3 days, although sometimes symptoms can last up to a week. If you, or your child, have a high temperature or you do not feel well enough to do your normal activities, try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until you feel better.

Using warm olive oil can also help prevent ear infection and get water out of the ear. If you plan on using this method, prepare to spend about 10-15 minutes on this. Place a few drops of the oil directly into your ear, and lie down on your side for at least 10 minutes.
If your ears are plugged, try swallowing, yawning or chewing sugar-free gum to open your eustachian tubes. If this doesn't work, take a deep breath and try to blow out of your nose gently while pinching your nostrils closed and keeping your mouth shut. If you hear a popping noise, you know you have succeeded.
