People who shove fingers, pencils or earplugs deep into their ear canal can get an impacted plug of wax that presses on the eardrum and may contribute to tinnitus. Olive oil ear-drops soften the wax and gentle suction (better than syringing) can be arranged by your GP.
EOs should never be placed into the ear canal, as the oil can burn the sensitive mucous membranes found within the ear if it is used undiluted. Most websites advise not to place the oil directly into the ear canal. Massage is the best way to apply EOs to help relieve symptoms.
Medications for Tinnitus
The use of a steroid placed into the middle ear along with an anti-anxiety medicine called alprazolam has been shown to be effective for some people. Some small studies have shown that a hormone called misoprostol may be helpful in some cases.
We've found one essential oil to be most often touted as a help for tinnitus, and that oil is Helichrysum-Italicum. Helichrysum oil is known for its mild, herbaceous aroma, great anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to alleviate muscle spasms.
If tinnitus is especially noticeable in quiet settings, try using a white noise machine to mask the noise from tinnitus. If you don't have a white noise machine, a fan, soft music or low-volume radio static also may help. Limit alcohol, caffeine and nicotine.
Ear drops alone will clear a plug of earwax in most cases. Put 2 or 3 drops of ordinary olive oil down the ear 2 or 3 times a day for 2-3 weeks. This softens the wax so that it then runs out of its own accord without harming the ear. You can continue for any length of time, but 3 weeks is usually enough.
There is no single medication that works on all tinnitus patients. Some of the antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications available are helpful for certain tinnitus patients, however more research is needed in this area.
Like all ear drops, Otex Olive Oil can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The ear drops can make the symptoms of excessive ear wax worse, including some discomfort, irritation or pain, loss of hearing, dizziness and tinnitus (ringing sound in the ear).
For some people, tinnitus may be temporary. A person may experience tinnitus as a symptom of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). NIHL occurs due to long-term exposure to a noisy environment. A person's NIHL symptoms can go away after leaving the noisy environment.
Traffic, loud music, construction – all of these can worsen tinnitus. Be sure to wear earplugs or another type of ear protection in order to prevent noise from making your tinnitus worse. Many medications are ototoxic, meaning they cause temporary (or, in some cases, permanent) damage to your hearing.
Lie on the opposite side of the treated ear, and gently squeeze one drop into your ear. It may help to gently pull your outer ear up and back to open your ear canal. Lightly massage your ear to work the olive oil into the hardened wax. Allow the oil to rest for five minutes.
It's ideal to instill olive oil on affected ear at night then lay/sleep on unaffected ear. If putting olive oil in both ears, you may find it easier to do alternate ears on alternate nights. Repeat this procedure daily for at least 7 nights prior to ear irrigation appointment.
Blockage of the ear canal by earwax or by fluid from an ear infection can trigger tinnitus. Head or neck injuries. A head/neck injury can damage structures of the ear, the nerve that carries sound signals to the brain, or areas of the brain that process sound, causing tinnitus.
Place your index fingers on top of you middle fingers and snap them (the index fingers) onto the skull making a loud, drumming noise. Repeat 40-50 times. Some people experience immediate relief with this method. Repeat several times a day for as long as necessary to reduce tinnitus.”

This can happen if the solution is left in the ear for too long or if the ear canal is already inflamed or irritated. This swelling can cause a feeling of blockage in the ears and may also lead to temporary hearing loss.
