While YouTube's picture-in-picture mode was previously removed on the iPhone, it has since returned bringing back a handy feature already enjoyed on some of the best Android phones. It's now available to any one on iOS 15 or above.
You can use picture-in-picture (PiP) to watch content across YouTube, with a YouTube Premium membership. If you don't have YouTube Premium and are in the United States, you can still use PiP, but you can't watch certain content, like music videos.
PIP mode is only for iPhone running with iOS 16/15 and iPad running with iOS 16/15. So, when iOS 16/15 Picture in Picture not working, ensure that your device is up-to-date to the required iOS version. To check and update the software on iDevice, follow the below steps: Open Settings > Go to General > Software Update.
The picture-in-picture feature is present on both Android and iOS, but it's only available to YouTube Premium subscribers. Nevertheless, you can use a few neat little tricks to watch YouTube in PiP mode on any desktop or mobile device.
Update YouTube on Your iPhone, iPad, or Android Phone
The YouTube app on your phone may be experiencing an issue, causing the PiP mode not to work. This usually happens if you're using an outdated version of the app. If that's the case, update the app on your phone, and your issue will be fixed.
To use YouTube's PiP mode, go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Picture-in-Picture, and toggle on "Allow Picture-in-Picture." Next, open your YouTube profile, navigate to Settings > General, and toggle on "Picture-in-Picture." Play a video and exit YouTube to see the floating video window.
Launch the Miniplayer
If you're using the YouTube app, the Miniplayer will automatically pop up at the bottom of the screen if you click the back button, or if you swipe down while watching a video. Note: If the content you're watching in the app is set as made for kids, the Miniplayer will be paused.
Your phone needs to meet some criteria to enable the YouTube PIP mode. First, your Android device should run Android 8.0 Oreo or above. Second, the PIP mode is currently available only in the United States.
Enable PiP Via In-App Settings
Apart from enabling PiP in the Settings app on your iPhone, you also need to enable the feature within the application you want to enable the PiP view for. Therefore, go to the settings menu of the app and turn on the toggle for Picture-in-Picture.
Possible reasons are as follows: Pip is not installed. Pip is not added to the PATH environment. Pip is installed, but it is not compatible with the current environment.
Step 1: Download the get-pip.py (https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py) file and store it in the same directory as python is installed. Step 2: Change the current path of the directory in the command line to the path of the directory where the above file exists. Step 4: Now wait through the installation process. Voila!
