Doctors may use blood tests to determine whether you have an infection. The only way to determine what type of bacteria is causing an infection is with a tissue or fluid sample culture. Information from these tests can help the doctor select the most effective antibiotic.
A typical routine blood test is the complete blood count, also called CBC, to count your red and white blood cells as well as measure your hemoglobin levels and other blood components. This test can uncover anemia, infection, and even cancer of the blood.
Blood culture: A blood culture test tries to identify what type of bacteria or fungi caused infection in the blood. Blood cultures are collected separately from other blood tests. They are usually taken more than once from different veins. It can take several days to get the results of a blood culture.

Most methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, infections contracted outside of a hospital are skin infections. In medical centers, MRSA causes life-threatening bloodstream and surgical-site infections, as well as pneumonia. MRSA is one of the most common antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Sepsis is the body's extreme response to an infection. It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have triggers a chain reaction throughout your body. Infections that lead to sepsis most often start in the lung, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract.
Antibiotics are used to treat or prevent some types of bacterial infection. They kill bacteria or prevent them from reproducing and spreading. Antibiotics aren't effective against viral infections.
