Essential Oils are NOT a cure for Autism. ASD is an irreversible condition (and many believe that Autism doesn't always need curing, its just a part of who your child is). Essential Oils do not directly help with improving learning and cognitive skills, though it is known to help improve focus and reduce inattention.
The application of essential oils for autistic children will depend on each child. Although most oils can be rubbed onto the skin, such as the back of the neck, some children's skin might be sensitive or get an allergic reaction. In this case, using an essential oil diffuser might work better.
Lavender. Lavender oil is ideal for bath time when the children are tired, stressed, or sick. Putting a few drops of lavender in the water can substantially help a child with autism calm down and get a good night's sleep.
Find sensory tools that can comfort a child at times of stress. These may include squeezy toys, weighted blankets, a calming video or book, a swing set, or even a pet. If a meltdown occurs, allow your child the time and space to calm themselves down and learn to self-regulate.
Sensory overload, changes in routine, social isolation, co-occurring conditions, and lack of support can all exacerbate the symptoms of autism. However, with early intervention, therapy, and support, individuals with autism can manage these challenges and improve their quality of life.
Four aromatherapy oils have been determined to be both safe and effective for use with children over age 5: lavender, peppermint, orange and ginger. Of these, lavender is the one Battista suggests trying first. Many children like the smell, and it is generally effective in calming a child who is anxious.
Recommended Dilution %
This is why it is always best to do a patch test before using lavender or any new essential oil topically. Just apply a small amount of diluted lavender oil to a patch of skin on the child's foot, an area of the body where our skin is a little thicker.
For some children, sensory toys such as squeeze balls and fidget toys, weighted blankets, their favorite videos, or activities can help them manage their emotions. You can set up a calming routine that the child practices on a regular basis, and make it part of their daily schedule.
Deep pressure massage for ASD relies on the massage therapist's flat palm and fingers, rather than fingertips, and firm, long, strong strokes. To help with proprioceptive issues, it's recommended that the massage therapist or caregiver explain in a soft, calming voice precisely which body part is being massaged.
Vitamin B6 and magnesium to ease autism symptoms
More than a dozen studies have suggested that supplementing vitamin B6 and magnesium in children with autism helps to ease symptoms, but the treatment remains controversial as each child's body will react differently to varying interventions.
An Ayurvedic herb called Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) which is known for its, anti-anxiety, neuroprotection and antioxidant properties can help considerably. Regular massages using sandalwood, rose, lavender and gotu kola oils are also very calming and relieving, because it stimulates the blood flow and neuronal responses.
When using essential oils topically on kids, it is best to apply them to the bottom of the feet, down the spine, or the area of concern. Avoid putting essential oils into the ears and eyes.
Certain essential oils — like lavender, peppermint, and chamomile — are thought to help with stress, inattention, and difficulty sleeping, and are used by some patients as a natural ADHD treatment or relaxation technique.
Use only the essential oils that have been studied and found to be safe and effective for use with children over the age of 3. These include lavender, peppermint, citrus, such as sweet orange or mandarin, and ginger.
Healthy Sleep or Calming
Reassuring blends of Vetiver, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Frankincense, Clary Sage, Marjoram, Labdanum and Spearmint are incredibly calming both during a tantrum or meltdown, or at bedtime. Apply diluted to the spine or feet to get that effect of calming.
Bergamot, clary sage, frankincense, Roman chamomile and ylang ylang essential oil can all boost your mental health.
Although your son's reaction sounds more severe than most, many people with autism struggle with a range of fears, phobias and worries. These can range from a debilitating fear of, say, spiders or the dark to chronic anxiety about making mistakes or being late.
