In particular, it's the allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife Amber Heard, and the court ruling that followed, which saw Depp exit Fantastic Beasts 3 and Grindelwald recast.
He was replaced by Mikkelsen, although Depp reportedly would still receive his full $16 million salary for the third film. “It was very intimidating,” Mikkelsen said of assuming Depp's role, according to Deadline.
Depp reportedly was asked to leave after shooting one day on the film — he was paid for the whole film but had a five-picture deal — and Warner Bros was on its toes trying to book a new actor.

Grindelwald was infatuated with Dumbledore. Both ingenious wizards with somewhat extreme ambitions, the two became inspired to find the Deathly Hallows and lead a revolution that would destroy the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, allowing wizards to rise as benign worldly overlords.
Grindelwald Is More Powerful and Cunning Than Voldemort
Grindelwald had more power in the Wizarding World up till the final moments of his life. He had more followers, and they were intensely loyal to him. He conquered more of the globe and could perform more advanced forms of magic.
Dan Stevens. Warner Bros. clearly used the Grindelwald and Dumbledore roles to amp up the star power of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, but if they're willing to go a little outside the box, Dan Stevens could be a great fit.
The writer of the Fantastic Beasts series, J.K. Rowling has never publicly stated that Newt has autism or was written to be autistic.
