A person with HPV can pass the infection to someone even when they have no signs or symptoms. If you are sexually active, you can get HPV, even if you have had sex with only one person.
HPV is highly contagious, in part, because it's transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. No body fluids have to be exchanged for you or your partner to contract the virus. You can infect your partner, or your partner can infect you even if no one ejaculates (cums).
Sexual behavior has long been linked to cervical cancer risk including high number of sex partners, prostitution, and risky sexual behavior of male partners. However, the efficiency of HPV transmission per sexual act has ranged from 5% to 100%.
Is HPV Contagious Forever? Most cases of HPV clear up on their own after one to two years, and you'll no longer be contagious once it leaves your system. However, the virus can remain dormant for years, and some people experience infections that stick around for much longer.

This means that when the immune system “clears” the infection, it is no longer present, so it cannot be spread to someone else. However, what is important to understand is that many people have HPV infections without symptoms, so they do not realize they are infected.
How common is HPV? HPV is very common. It is estimated that up to 80% of people in Australia have HPV at some time in their lives.
At this stage most people don't know they have HPV. This means that a person has the virus but there are no warts or other signs of infection. The virus can still be spread to others during genital skin-to-skin contact even if there are no symptoms.

Some HPV infections can lead to cancer
Most HPV infections (9 out of 10) go away by themselves within 2 years. But sometimes, HPV infections will last longer and can cause some cancers. HPV infections can cause cancers of the: Cervix, vagina, and vulva.

HPV is passed from one person to another during contact with an infected part of the body. Although HPV can be spread during sexual contact – including vaginal, anal, and oral sex – sex isn't the only way for the infection to spread. All that's needed is skin-to-skin contact with an area of the body infected with HPV.
A positive HPV test means you do have an HPV type that may be linked to cervical cancer. This does not mean you have cervical cancer now. But it could be a warning. The specific HPV type may be identified to determine the next step.
Genital warts or cervical cells can be removed if needed, but this doesn't eliminate the virus from your system. And you'll never know who gave the infection to whom. So, while I recommend honesty in all things sexual, you can be forgiven for not talking to your partner about your HPV infection.
Does my husband/partner need to be tested? No your husband/partner does not need to be tested. HPV is very common, and we do not know how long you may have had it. Your partner is also likely to have had HPV, and they may still have it, or their body may have dealt with it.
People can be infected with HPV without having sexual intercourse. The likelihood of exposure increases with the number of partners a person has, and HPV will often spread early in a relationship as the person is newly exposed to the virus.
Those who said they were depressed or believed they had high levels of stress also still had an active HPV infection. HPV usually clears up on its own, but this study is really the first to indicate a link between stress and persistent HPV infection.
