Mpox was discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research. Despite being named “monkeypox,” the source of the disease remains unknown. However, African rodents and non-human primates (like monkeys) might harbor the virus and infect people.
Monkeypox is spread by close contact and exposure to an infected person's respiratory droplets, skin lesions or bodily fluids. Monkeypox symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, fever, and a rash that may initially be mistaken for chickenpox or a sexually transmitted disease if in the genital or anal region.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed the presence of monkeypox virus in one Gambian giant rat, three dormice, and two rope squirrels. The animals were part of a shipment of African rodents imported to the United States on April 9, 2003.
To date most people with mpox in Australia have been infected while overseas. However, a small number of people have been infected in Australia.
The rash typically started on the face and spread to many areas of the body. People usually had between 10 and 150 pox-like bumps on their skin. Some people developed more than 200 bumps.
