Do People with ADHD Have Poor Posture? Yes, many individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) tend to exhibit poor posture. This is often due to a combination of factors such as muscle imbalances, decreased body awareness, and difficulties in maintaining focus on proper alignment.
The short answer is that we have an aversion to sitting still for the same reason we have an aversion to other boring tasks: its understimulating.
Mental Health Issues
Anxiety can manifest as restlessness, an inability to concentrate, impulsive reactions, and hyperactive behaviors. 4 This anxiety can make it extremely difficult to sit still and control fidgeting.
Children with ADHD often demonstrate poor posture and postural-ocular integration which can be manifested in trouble sitting still, taking frequent movement breaks, or slumping/leaning.
Similar to the hyperactive symptoms, impulsive symptoms are typically seen by the time a child is four years old and increase during the next three to four years to peak in severity when the child is seven to eight years of age.
