Grab a small string of some kind and lightly wrap it around the base of her finger. When you pull it away, mark the length of the string with a piece of tape or marker. Take it the jeweler when you go to pick out the ring and you'll be pretty close to the perfect size.
Simply put one of your partner's rings on your finger and remember (or mark) where it stops. A jeweler can measure that part of your finger and get a good estimate of the size of that ring. Each finger is typically a different size, so make sure to use a ring that your partner actually wears on the ring finger.
Whether you actually buy that ring is up to you, but you could ask her to give her ring size to get an idea of what size to get for the present.
The average women's ring size is 6 and the average men's ring size is 8½ Guessing your partner's ring size correctly can be done with a little common sense. If you have a petite partner, it's likely that their hands are smaller with slender fingers, so try starting at a size 4 or 4½ for women, and around a 7 for men.
Size 7 = 17.3 mm. Size 7.5 = 17.7 mm. Size 8 = 18.2 mm. Size 8.5 = 18.6 mm.
Or, they think it has something to do with their shoe size. Yes, size 10.0 shoes are the most common for men and so are size 10.0 rings, but that's just a coincidence. Your ring size most likely is not the same as your shoe size.
General Rule: You should spend at least 2 months salary on the engagement ring. If, for example, you are making $60,000 per year, you should spend $10,000 on the engagement ring.
The Commentary Route
A simple, effective, and subtle way to drop ring hints is to comment on other people's engagement rings. So, if your friend just got engaged and there's something you love about her ring, comment on it to your partner. For example, “John picked out such a gorgeous ring for Sarah!
Wrap the ring in a pretty box and give it to your girlfriend on a traditional gift giving holiday, such as her birthday, Valentine's Day or Christmas. Make sure you're there to watch her open it, both so you can explain its significance and so that you can see her face light up when she first sees it.
A promise ring, sometimes known as a pre-engagement ring, is given in a relationship to signify commitment. Whilst for many young couples a promise ring means a vow of an engagement ring to come, others may simply use it to show their loyalty and devotion to their partner.
It depends on when you feel comfortable and settled enough in your relationship to want to make a promise. This process may only take a couple of months for some people, while for others, it may take a year. Typically, we'd recommend waiting for at least six months before you give or receive a promise ring.
Rule of Thumb: A proper fitting ring should slide over your knuckle with a little friction and fit snugly on your finger, but not too tight. You should feel resistance and need to apply a little extra force to remove the ring backwards over your knuckle.
Average Woman's Ring Size
You can see that approximately half of women's ring sizes were between 6 and 8 with 7 being the most popular size. Whole sizes are more popular than half sizes and rings range from a tiny size 3 up to size 11.5.

Size 7 is the most common ring size for women. However, if you're a petite woman with small hands, your ring size is probably going to be smaller than a size 7. If you're not a petite woman with small hands than it is safe to say that your ring size will probably be larger than a size 7.
Sizes can go larger, but that tends to be the median among the entire population. Men tend to wear anywhere between a size 7 to a size 14 — from the slender fingers of a pianist to the thick fingers of a construction worker. The average men's ring size is a size 9.
A plain band can be sized up or down as much as six or seven sizes. Solitaire-style rings can also be sized up and down significantly from 4 to 5 sizes, provided that they do not have complicated shoulder designs. The shoulders of the ring are the portions of metal on the left and right of the ring's design.
It entails the jeweler stretching the metal, and this can only be done up to half a size larger. If you need it to be larger than that, the jeweler will cut the band and add in an extra piece of metal, which they will then solder, clean, and polish.
