An infant or child will get a diagnosis of low muscle tone when: The muscles appear to be less firm than usual. The child appears to be floppy and to have loose joints. The child appears to be less alert and have poor posture and attention.
The assessment of tone can be made both from observing the posture, activity of the infant when undisturbed, and by handling the baby. Infants with normal tone will not feel "floppy" when held by the examiner.
Hypotonia can be caused by a variety of conditions, including those that involve the central nervous system, muscle disorders, and genetic disorders. Some common causes can include but are not limited to: Down syndrome. muscular dystrophy.
Babies with hypotonia will feel floppier than other babies. Children with hypotonia may have increased flexibility, poor posture, get tired easily and have delays in reaching motor milestones like sitting, crawling or walking.
Hypotonia, or low muscle tone, is common in autistic children. Some studies have shown that over 50% of children with ASD experienced hypotonia. Because of its prevalence among autistic children, hypotonia often serves as an early indicator that your child may fall on the autism spectrum.
The problem with low tone kids is that their core muscles don't support them well. This can cause problems with sitting still and focusing at school, coordination problems with sports, and more.
Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the parts of the brain that control motor functions, such as muscle tone. This is especially true in the most common form of CP that accounts for 70% of all cases — spastic cerebral palsy. Muscle tone in cerebral palsy patients can be low, high, or a combination of both.
Infants with hypotonia have a floppy quality or “rag doll” appearance because their arms and legs hang by their sides and they have little or no head control. Other symptoms of hypotonia include problems with mobility and posture, breathing and speech difficulties, ligament and joint laxity, and poor reflexes.

It is common for children with low muscle tone to have speech movement problems, but the specific phonetic and phonological errors will be specific to the child.
Muscle tone is assessed by feeling the muscle's resistance to passive stretch. There is a considerable degree of normal variation. To test this, flex and extend the patient's elbow, wrists, knee, and ankle joints. If decreased resistance is suspected, hold the forearm and shake the hand back and forth loosely.
Low muscle tone CANNOT be changed. But your child's muscle strength, motor control and physical endurance CAN be changed.
A child with level 1 autism may understand and speak in complete sentences, but have difficulty engaging in back-and-forth conversation. Children with ASD level 1 experience some inflexibility of behavior, like difficulty switching between tasks, staying organized, and planning.
