Change the volume of sound effects using iPhone or iPad
On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Accessibility > AirPods. Select your AirPods, then adjust Tone Volume.
Now consider that the maximum volume of Apple's AirPods can reach 100 dB or more, and that people wearing earbuds tend to listen at a higher volume than those wearing over-the-ear headphones. It's the perfect recipe for permanent hearing damage, even absent ear-splitting alerts and notifications.
To do so, go to Settings and tap on Sounds & Haptics. There is an option called Headphone safety. By enabling Reduce Loud Sounds, the user can set the maximum volume anywhere between 70 and 100 decibels. By default, it is set to 85db, but users can set it to 100db to make AirPods louder.
85 decibels is a noise or sound level equivalent to that of a food blender, heavy traffic while you are in the car, a noisy restaurant, or a cinema.
iOS options
You can set a hard volume limit under Settings > Sounds (or Sounds & Haptics) > Headphone Safety. Navigate to the Sounds & Haptics menu to access the Headphones Safety option. Within the Headphones Safety menu, you can reduce loud sounds and limit the volume.
100 – 120 decibels: For example, a bulldozer, impact wrench, or motorcycle. 120 – 140 decibels: Such as, a rock concert, auto racing, or a hammer pounding a nail. 125 – 155 decibels: Like, firecrackers or fireworks, or a jet engine. 170 – 190 decibels: For example, a shot gun blast or a rocket lift off.
Noise above 70 dB over a prolonged period of time may start to damage your hearing. Loud noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm to your ears. The table below shows dB levels and how noise from everyday sources can affect your hearing.
Overall, noise cancellation in headphones doesn't affect your hearing negatively. You may hear a slight hissing sound when you the ANC is turned on, but that's about it. However, for some people this can be irritating and even result in dizziness.
Select Digital Crown, then choose an option. On Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click the name of your AirPods Max in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). On the right, select an option next to “Increase volume by rotating Digital Crown.”
If there's low volume in one AirPod
Check the microphone and speaker mesh on each AirPod. If you see any debris, clean your AirPods using the guidelines in this article, and see if that fixes the issue. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Balance, and make sure that the balance is set in the middle.
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Headphone Accommodations. Tap Custom Audio Setup. Follow the instructions on your screen. When finished, tap Use Custom Settings to apply the custom settings suggested based on your choices.
Sounds between 170-200 dB are so intense that they can cause lethal issues like pulmonary embolisms, pulmonary contusions, or even burst lungs. As for exploding heads, you can expect that from sounds above 240 dB. However, such high intensity sounds are very rare.

Go to Settings on your iPhone > Click “Control Center > Add “Hearing” > Now swipe up or down (depending on your phone) for your control center and tap the ear icon. If you are wearing your AirPods, you should see a meter that indicates how loud your headphones are in dB. Stay in the 60s or 70s for safe listening.
