Ensure you are performing the basics: praying five times a day, paying zakat, fasting in Ramadan, etc. You should make dua with sincerity and a focused mind and heart. You should feel with absolute conviction that Allah SWT will answer your dua, and no one can answer it but Him.
If you are committing any sin which you are aware of, then it is best advised to stop committing that sin so that Allah will answer your dua's. We don't know which sin of ours is stopping Allah from accepting our prayers.
“In three situations, if you pray du'a, it will definitely be accepted: 1) When your body starts shaking. 2) When you got fear in your heart. 3) When you got tears in your eyes.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “There are five nights on which du'a is not rejected: the first night of Rajab, the fifteenth night of Sha`ban, Thursday night, the night before Eid al-Fitr and the night before Eid al-Adha”.
The best way to prepare for du'a is to make wudu, face the Qiblah, raise your hands and call upon your Lord in a low voice. Our du'a should include praise for Allah and prayers for the Prophet (saw), invoking Allah by His Names, asking for every matter, big and small, making du'a for others and concluding with amin.

Dua means invocation - to call out - and is an act of supplication, meaning asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly. For Muslims, it is an act of worship in which we ask Allah for His forgiveness and mercy, to grant us His favours and answer our requests.
Others find it appropriate to offer dua at any point during prayer, including opening or closing prayer with it, but either way each of the five daily salah provide a perfect opportunity to make dua. It is always required to perform wudu (ritual washing) and face qibla (toward the Kaaba in Mecca) during salah.
