Orthostatic hypotension — also called postural hypotension — is a form of low blood pressure that happens when standing after sitting or lying down. Orthostatic hypotension can cause dizziness or lightheadedness and possibly fainting. Orthostatic hypotension can be mild.
Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after exercise and in hot weather. Keep blood circulating. If you have to stand or sit for a long time, take breaks often and move around. Regularly tense your leg muscles or cross your legs to help improve blood flow.
You'll be glad to know that most often, it's benign. Postural hypotension typically happens when you've been seated or horizontal long enough for blood to pool in your legs. When you stand up, it takes your body a few seconds to adjust to the change in position and send enough blood and oxygen to your brain.
When we get out of bed or stand up, the blood vessels in our body need to clamp down rapidly to maintain blood pressure going to the brain. If we stand too quickly, blood pressure can drop and cause dizziness, lightheadedness or fuzzy vision.
Left untreated, however, iron-deficiency anemia can make you feel tired and weak. You may notice pale skin and cold hands and feet. Iron-deficiency anemia can also cause you to feel dizzy or lightheaded.
Before fainting, it's common to experience some of the following: dizziness. lightheadedness. sweating.
Subtract the systolic (top number) blood pressure while sitting or standing from the systolic blood pressure while lying down. If the difference is a decrease of 20 mmHg or more, this supports a finding of orthostatic hypotension.
In people with orthostatic hypotension, hypoperfusion to other organs contributes to an increased risk of life-threatening health problems, including heart attack or heart failure, a heart rhythm abnormality called atrial fibrillation , stroke, or chronic kidney failure.

Most often, there is a warning prodrome, consisting of nausea, sweating, pallor, feeling of warmth, tingling of extremities, “graying out” and/or tunnel vision. This prodrome usually affords the patient a warning, allowing time to brace for a fall, thereby preventing serious injury.
Most people will recover quickly after fainting once they lie down as more blood flows to the brain. It also helps to loosen any constrictive clothing. After they wake up, have them stay lying down or sitting for a while longer until they're feeling better. Give them water to help them stay hydrated.
In most cases, dizziness associated with heart problems is accompanied by other symptoms. These may include shortness of breath, swollen extremities, frequent fatigue or chest pain. In the event heart disease is suspected, you will undergo one or more tests to get to the root of your problem.

Without Medication. Performing a counter-maneuver: Making a fist, crossing your legs, or clenching your buttocks may improve blood flow and raise blood pressure. Having a cup of coffee: Caffeinated coffee can cause a rapid rise in blood pressure. The effect is generally quick and levels off within a few hours.
Causes of orthostatic hypotension
Fever. Prolonged bed rest. Excessive amounts of alcohol. Some medications, such as some diuretics or antihypertensive (high blood pressure) medications.
Drink 500 ml of cold water 30 minutes before getting out of bed in the morning. This will increase your blood pressure when you get up. Drinking 500 ml of water in any other moment of the day will also increase your blood pressure.
Water drinking elicits a rapid pressor response in patients with autonomic failure and can be used to treat orthostatic and postprandial hypotension. Water drinking moderately reduces orthostatic tachycardia in patients with idiopathic orthostatic intolerance.
Blackouts vs.
A blackout is not the same as “passing out,” which means either falling asleep or losing consciousness from drinking too much. During a blackout, a person is still awake but their brain is not creating new memories.
