Mice are excellent lab animals where it comes to anxiety and fear experiments. When a mouse is scared, its defensive behaviours range from freezing, attacking, risk assessment or fleeing the scene. How a mouse acts depends on variables such as access to escape routes or the level of threat faced.
Anxiety and fear produce similar behavioral responses, including increased vigilance, freezing and/or hypoactivity, elevated heart rate, and suppressed food consumption.
Fear has its own smell. It comes from what scientists call an "alarm pheromone." Animals produce it when they're stressed, but how it works has long puzzled scientists. Now, a team in Switzerland has discovered an organ in the nose of mice that detects alarm pheromones — in effect, it smells fear.
Sprinkle scents they don't like
Mice don't like the smell of garlic, onions, cayenne pepper, cloves, ammonia and alcohol. If you don't want to be driven out your home by unpleasant smells either, peppermint is another scent that repels mice.
House mice are not scared of humans and are sociable animals. This means they are far more likely to come into your home voluntarily. They live in both rural and urban landscapes, but may be particularly annoying for farm owners or those who live near open fields.
Mice actually prefer to avoid human contact and are rather shy creatures, so the chances of them snuggling up with you in bed is not likely.
As for the lights inside your house, it is not an effective mice deterrent. This is because they can easily look for dark areas to hide inside houses until such time as all lights are turned off. While the lights are on, they can hide inside walls, crawl spaces, attics, and ceilings.
Because mice avoid danger, they may be scared off by bright, flashing lights or loud noises.
How Long Do Mice Stay in a House? The lifespan of a typical mouse ranges from about six months to two years. Generally, the more access to food and shelter a mouse has, the longer it will live. This means that a mouse in your home has the potential to stick around for several months at a minimum.
If they're communicating to stay away from a trap because of the scent of human or dead mouse, things can get tricky. Mice have incredible memories. They can even remember who their family is and form bonds with them.

A common misconception is that mice are only attracted to dirty places or areas with lots of trash, that is not the case. In fact, mice are explorers who go around looking for any source of food they can find. Just because your home is clean, doesn't mean you're protected from a mice infestation.

Peppermint oil, cayenne pepper, pepper and cloves.
Mice are said to hate the smell of these. Lightly soak some cotton balls in oils from one or more of these foods and leave the cotton balls in places where you've had problems with mice.
Peppermint oil is a natural deterrent. The smell is simply too intense for rodents and they will not try to go near it. It also helps to mask the scent of any tasty morsels that have been missed when cleaning.
Mice are attracted to the smell of leftover food, cheese, peanut butter, fruits, grains and seeds. It is essentially anything that has high quotient of carbohydrate. Mice are attracted to oily greasy smells and will latch on to insulations and wiring as they are appealing snacks for them.
Just put a few drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball and leave it on the corner of the room. Place a few cotton balls near the bed to prevent the rodents from climbing. Camphor – Camphor repels mice the same way peppermint oil does. It's also readily available online or in grocery stores.
Nighttime activity. Are mice nocturnal? Yes, mice are nocturnal creatures, so they are most likely to be active and come out of their hiding during the night. They go out searching for food and nesting material when everyone is sound asleep.
Will dog fur keep mice away? Mice have a very sensitive sense of smell, and if they sense the smell of a predator, they are much more likely to avoid the area. However, mice do not seem to be afraid of dog smells or their fur.
