CT (computed tomography) scan or CT angiogram. These tests might be done to look for pulmonary embolism or for a blood clot that may cause it. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This test may be used to view clots in the lungs.
You may feel like you're having a heart attack. The pain is often sharp and felt when you breathe in deeply. The pain can stop you from being able to take a deep breath. You also may feel it when you cough, bend or lean over.

Blood clots do not show up on an X-ray, but it can see other things such as fluid or pneumonia on the lungs that can explain your symptoms. A normal chest X-ray with unexplained low blood oxygen level, increases the suspicion that you have a pulmonary embolism.

The recovery time for a blood clot in the lungs, or pulmonary embolism, can vary. People may need to stay in the hospital and take medications to prevent further clots for 3 months or more.
In most cases, the hope is your body will eventually dissolve the clot on its own. If it doesn't, more drastic measures may need to be taken. Clot dissolvers called thrombolytics are a medication reserved for life-threatening situations because they can cause sudden and severe bleeding.

Will you be admitted to the hospital or sent home? If a DVT is confirmed, you may be discharged and sent home with injectable or oral anticoagulant medication (sometimes called a blood thinner). That said, every patient is different, and you may be admitted to the hospital if the ER doctor believes it's necessary.
The length of time you will stay in the hospital for treatment of a blood clot varies. The average hospital stay length is between five and seven days. However, some people may only stay for two or three days while others stay for two to three weeks.
A pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blood clot in the lungs. Usually these clots form in the legs, break off and travel through the blood vessels, then get stuck in the lungs. It can cause pain, swelling, and red or dark, tender skin. The area around the blood clot may feel tight or sore like you have a muscle cramp or charley horse. Unfortunately, these symptoms of a blood clot can be confused with other conditions, including muscle pain and muscle injury.
After a pulmonary embolism, the body spends a lot of energy on healing the heart and lungs, even if they were minimally affected. You may feel more tired, more often and be sick, more often than before your PE.
The most common presenting symptom is dyspnea followed by chest pain (classically pleuritic but often dull) and cough. However, many patients, including those with large PE, have mild or nonspecific symptoms or are asymptomatic.
Survival after PE depends on several factors, including age, underlying medical conditions, and the size of the clot. After PE, mortality can range from 5–15% but may be higher or lower depending on the circumstances.
A D-dimer test is a blood test that can be used to help rule out the presence of a serious blood clot.
