When a one-syllable word ends in f, l, or s, double the final f, l, or s (for example, snif, fall, mess). We call this the floss spelling rule because the word floss follows this rule and includes the letters f, l, and s to help us remember the rule.
Now, with the nouns that end in 'ff' simply add letter 'S' to make it a plural ok? The spelling is not changed, we are just adding the letter S. The word, for example, the word handcuff, has plural handcuffs.
Nouns ending in –f and –fe
To make a plural of a word ending in -f, change the f to a v and add es. Similarly, if a word ends in -fe, change the f to a v and add an s.
The spelling rule is outlined in the National Curriculum and states that Year 1 children should know when to use this sound. If a word ends in a 'f' sound, it is most likely going to end with two of that letter: 'ff'. Normally if the vowel sound before it is short, like an 'uh' sound, the next letters will be 'ff'.
Plural noun rules
1 To make regular nouns plural, add –s to the end. 2 If the singular noun ends in –s, –ss, –sh, –ch, –x, or –z, you usually add -es to the end to make it plural. 3 In some cases, singular nouns ending in –s or –z require that you double the –s or –z prior to adding the –es for pluralization.
