Don't worry – soft stools mean MOVICOL has started to work. However, if the poo becomes very runny or diarrhoea (see Stool Type 7 on the chart in this leaflet), you should stop taking your medicine until the runny poo stops.
Sometimes you may have indigestion, stomach ache or rumbles. You may also feel bloated, suffer from wind, feel sick or vomit, may also experience soreness of the anus (bottom) and may have mild diarrhoea when starting to take Movicol. These side effects generally get better if you reduce the amount Movicol you take.
HOW LONG WILL MOVICOL® TAKE TO WORK? Don't be concerned if MOVICOL® does not work immediately. MOVICOL® usually takes 1 to 2 days to trigger the first bowel movement.
How do you know when faecal impaction has cleared? There may be small lumps of poo of any shade of brown if the treatment has been successful. If your child is suffering from faecal impaction, you can give them some sweetcorn. If it appears in your child's poo within 24 hours, the impaction has cleared.

Constipation is when you poop infrequently and bowel movements are tough to pass. Fecal impaction is when stool backs up and is so large and dry that it gets stuck in your rectum. Fecal impaction can be caused by chronic constipation.
The typical presenting symptoms of fecal impaction are similar to those found in intestinal obstruction from any cause, including abdominal pain and distention, nausea, vomiting, and anorexia.
Signs and symptoms of an impacted bowel include abdominal cramping, bloating, leakage of liquid or sudden episodes of watery diarrhea in a person with chronic constipation, rectal bleeding, small and semi-formed stools, and others.
Movicol won't make you have a bowel movement immediately; it can take one to two days of taking Movicol for it to work.
Drink Ready To Take directly from the sachet. There is no need to dilute it with water. It is recommended you drink a glass of water or other liquid after drinking the sachet.
MOVICOL® is a gentle and effective treatment for both chronic and occasional constipation. It has been available around the world for more than 20 years, and there are many clinical studies that prove its effectiveness and gentle mode of action.

About macrogol Brand names: Movicol, Laxido, CosmoCol, Molaxole. Macrogol (or macrogols) is a laxative taken to treat constipation (difficulty pooing). You can also use it to help clear a build-up of hard poo in your bowel, which can happen if you've been constipated for a long time (faecal impaction).
Common symptoms include: Abdominal cramping and bloating. Leakage of liquid or sudden episodes of watery diarrhea in someone who has chronic (long-term) constipation. Rectal bleeding.
Severe constipation can be demonstrated on AXR with faecal loading. They appear as hazy clouds, which, if seen in the rectum, demonstrates faecal impaction. This can cause overflow diarrhoea, subacute obstruction, toxic megacolon and perforate the bowel.
Can you still poop with an impaction? You usually will not poop if you are experiencing fecal impaction. If you do, the stool you pass will be watery, or very hard and small, or you may experience stool leakage.
Eating When you Have Constipation. Try these things to relieve your constipation: Do not skip meals. Avoid processed or fast foods, such as white breads, pastries, doughnuts, sausage, fast-food burgers, potato chips, and French fries.
If hardened stool is palpable in the rectum, it may require manual fragmentation or disimpaction.
No Bowel Movements for More Than One Week
Too many days with no bowel movements could lead to fecal impaction, in which stool hardens and bulks up so much that you cannot pass it, Dr. Bedford explained.
You must give each sachet with one glass of water. Do not put two sachets together into one drink.
Powder sachets
Dissolve each sachet in 125ml (one-quarter of a pint) of water, or 62.5ml (one-eighth of a pint) of water if you're giving paediatric sachets to a child. Stir well, then drink.
The water retained by MOVICOL® softens the stool and bulks it up slightly. As the stool gently expands, it naturally triggers colonic activity and a bowel movement. Because of the lubricating effect of MOVICOL® and the rehydrated, softened, stool - the bowel movement feels comfortable.
