If a Tesla's 12-volt battery loses its charge while you're in the vehicle, you have options. Even if the locks are not working, you and your passengers can open the doors on a Model 3, S, and Y using a mechanical release in front of the window switches.
To open the Model Y front doors from the inside without 12V power, lift the mechanical release handle located near the window switches. It is important to know that in any vehicle collision with damage to the driver or passenger front door, the mechanical door release may not operate as designed.
Tesla's Key Cards are still important and can be used in place of the Tesla app's Phone Key when the iPhone or Android phone is lost, damaged, or has a dead battery. Therefore, keeping one in a wallet or bag is a good idea.
An illuminated mechanical release located inside the rear trunk allows you to open the rear trunk from the inside if Model S has no electrical power. This mechanical release also allows a person locked inside to get out. Remove the cover by pulling its lower edge very firmly toward you.

Tesla recommends that you always have a functional physical key readily available if parking in an area with limited or absent cellular service, such as an indoor parking garage. To unlock your vehicle using the mobile app: Open the mobile app on your phone. Touch Controls > Unlock.
Some smartphones with NFC capability can be used to lock/unlock your vehicle, just like using a key card. Ensure the Tesla mobile app is correctly paired to your vehicle and enable the NFC function on your phone. Once enabled, simply hold the phone to the driver's side door pillar to lock or unlock the door.

Press the interior release button to open the front trunk, then push up on the hood. The interior release button glows following a brief exposure to ambient light.
