There are currently no medical tests for ADHD If you're concerned about your child's behaviour, your GP is a good place to start. Your GP might refer your child to a paediatrician, a psychologist or a child psychiatrist for a diagnosis of ADHD (or other condition).
Accessing private clinics and clinicians is the usual way adults can be assessed for ADHD in Australia. If you're interested in accessing stimulant medication, the most effective treatment for ADHD, then seeing a psychiatrist who specialises in ADHD is usually the most efficient path.
If you are concerned about whether a child might have ADHD, the first step is to talk with a healthcare provider to find out if the symptoms fit the diagnosis. The diagnosis can be made by a mental health professional, like a psychologist or psychiatrist, or by a primary care provider, like a pediatrician.

A formal diagnosis of ADHD can only be made by qualified health professionals. Whilst general practitioners, and other front-line health providers may have useful information and experience in identifying ADHD symptoms, the diagnosis needs to be made by a paediatrician or a child psychiatrist.
Help for ADHD
As a first step, see your GP (family doctor). A GP can assess your symptoms and write you a referral to see a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist if you need it.
The GP cannot formally diagnose ADHD, but they can discuss your concerns with you and refer you for a specialist assessment, if necessary. When you see a GP, they may ask you: about your symptoms or those of your child. when these symptoms started.
Medicare Rebates:
To access Medicare rebates you will need to see your GP and request a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Medicare offers up to 10 sessions of therapy a year for people diagnosed with ADHD who are under this plan. It will cover standard psychological therapy including skill training.
Medicare offers coverage for Adderall in most Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans. Your cost for Adderall using Medicare will depend on your specific plan. However, in many cases, you'll be able to purchase the generic form of Adderall, amphetamine salt combo, at a lower cost using Medicare.
Getting an accurate diagnosis enables them to find and start an effective treatment plan, which is life-changing. A failure to recognize these behaviors, especially when they're severe, can lead to a missed diagnosis of ADHD.

Since you can treat and manage ADHD with medication and psychotherapy, the organisation doesn't list this disorder as a disability. Currently, the National Disability Insurance Scheme doesn't consider ADHD a permanent disability or impairment.
ADHD Treatment (First Steps)
However, only with a specialist diagnosis can these medications be accessed. Whilst ADHD medications are highly effective, they are stimulants which are “controlled” drugs. You need a special type of prescription from a specialist ADHD clinician.

ADHD Assessment & Treatment Centres
To legally protect the rights of people with ADHD in Australia, under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), a person's ADHD must be classed as a disability according to the criteria as specified in the DDA.
They expect the wait time to be about 6 months. Information is updated on their website on a regular basis. Should you receive an ADHD diagnosis and want to opt to try medication there is then a medication titration list. We understand that titration wait list to be 3 to 6 months.
Most evaluations will include a patient interview, possible interviews with or questionnaires for friends or family members and a written assessment form, such as the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale-IV or the Connors for adults.
To receive an ADHD diagnosis, you must have at least five different symptoms. They must affect you in at least two different settings (school, work, home, etc.). Your healthcare professional might use a behavior rating scale to find out how often you experience symptoms of adult ADHD in your daily life.
Adults who think they may have ADHD should talk to their health care provider. Primary care providers routinely diagnose and treat ADHD and may refer individuals to mental health professionals. You do not technically need psychological testing for a diagnosis of ADHD. Some doctors will give the diagnosis based on a single checklist. There are even internet-based “assessments” you can complete now that can lead to a diagnosis by a mental health professional who has never even met you.
