Tala tells him he did manage to push her out of the way. In this way, Tala explains, he also managed to atone every day for her unnecessary death. In the end, it shows that Eddie's Heaven is the Stardust Band Shell, where he met Marguerite.
Eddie (John Voight) is the responsible for the maintenance of the Ruby Pier amusement park and a veteran of World War II. While trying to save a five year old girl from an accident with ride that is falling after rupturing the wire, Eddie dies.
Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him, as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart.
A little girl whom Eddie has spoken to a few times at Ruby Pier, and who calls him “Eddie Maint'nance.” Eddie dies saving this little girl, whose name he can't remember. When he sees her under the collapsing ride, he runs to push her out of the way.
Redemption and Forgiveness
Throughout the novel, Eddie's encounters with the five people he meets in heaven teach him about the surprising ways in which life and death offer opportunities for redemption.

Eddie arrives in Heaven, where he meets "the Blue Man." The Blue Man explains that Eddie is about to journey through Heaven's five levels, meeting someone who has had a significant impact upon his life or someone on whom his life had a significant impact.
After a few months of living together, Shannon made a surprise announcement that she was possibly pregnant to Eddie, but it turned out she was just late. The incident caused her to evaluate her life, and confess to Eddie she wanted a divorce.
Who finally leads Eddie to Heaven? Tala; her hands were in his. What does Eddie feel that ultimately brings him peace? Being washed and cleansed from his hurts.
Marguerite is the central source of Eddie's happiness, and his life plunges when she dies of brain cancer at the age of 47. In heaven, she takes Eddie to a heaven full of weddings, where she teaches him that true love never dies.
The fourth person Eddie meets in Heaven is his wife, Marguerite. She is one of the few people he meets whom he knew in his life.
The Captain's Story
The Captain looks straight at Eddie and tells him that he was the one who shot Eddie in the leg all those years ago. He knew that Eddie would never have been able to leave that burning building, so he had to take Eddie's leg to save Eddie's life.
He died from a heart attack, caused by the shock from a young Eddie running into the street after a lost ball on his birthday. The Blue Man teaches Eddie that all lives are connected, even strangers.
Tala tells Eddie that he killed her in a fire and he immediately knows that she was the innocent child trapped in the hut.
One of the most tragic and weirdest Venom stories is how the symbiote made Eddie Brock pregnant, and this pregnancy created more chaos than Carange.
Ruby tells Eddie that he should learn from this story that holding onto anger is poisonous. You may think anger will act as a weapon toward others, but it only hurts you.
Unfortunately, Eddie is a victim of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy with his own mother as the abuser. This means Mrs. Kaspbrak has been faking all of Eddie's illnesses in order to have unlimited control over him. Even his asthma inhaler is a placebo or "gazeebo" as the 2017 version of Eddie so hilariously puts it.
Although Mickey was a drunk and touching Eddie's mother, Eddie's father knew he had to save his friend and to preserve the loyalty in their friendship.
His father's last words to him were “get a job.” He tells Ruby that she didn't even know his father. But Ruby knows something that Eddie doesn't know. With the tip of her parasol, Ruby draws a circle in the snow. Eddie looks down into the circle as though his eyes are falling through a hole.
After violently grabbing his crying wife and jerking her around, Eddie's father runs after Mickey and into the storm. He finds Mickey at the ocean, and the two men fall into the tide fighting. The water catches Mickey, and Eddie's father decides to rescue him. He pulls Mickey to safety.
Therefore, Eddie's journey through heaven teaches him that in order for him to redeem and forgive himself, he must be able to cope with pain and suffering. To begin with, Eddie's memories teach him one vital lesson: for him to be better self-pleased, he must let go of his exasperation and detest towards others.
Meanwhile, Eddie has a rough transition into his new job, firefighter Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark) makes an impulsive relationship decision, and the 118 welcome two new members to the team.
