As a person approaches death, their vital signs may change in the following ways: blood pressure drops. breathing changes. heartbeat becomes irregular.
Physical signs that death is near include: a sudden burst of energy. mottled and blotchy skin, especially on the hands, feet and knees. blood pressure decreases.
Pulse and heartbeat are irregular or hard to feel or hear. Body temperature drops. Skin on their knees, feet, and hands turns a mottled bluish-purple (often in the last 24 hours) Breathing is interrupted by gasping and slows until it stops entirely.
The first organ system to “close down” is the digestive system. Digestion is a lot of work! In the last few weeks, there is really no need to process food to build new cells. That energy needs to go elsewhere.
The olfactory nerve is also the only part of the nervous system that is exposed to the open air. As such, it offers poisons and pathogens a quick route into the brain, and so losing smell could be an early warning of something that will ultimately cause death.

As the blood pools, patches appear on the skin within 30 minutes of death. Additionally, the death rattle doesn't occur for everyone. In fact, the death rattle was only reported in about 40% of people during the dying phase and in about 35% of people during the last 24 hours of life.
