Australia could be set for an increasingly hot and dry coming months with a major government department making a bold prediction.
The summer of 2012–13 will go down as Australia's hottest on record, and January 2013 as the nation's hottest month. Mean temperatures for the summer were 1.11 °C above normal, 0.13 °C above the previous record set in 1997–98.
Temperature: The temperature during winters in Australia averages between 15 degrees and 26 degrees Celsius with a maximum temperature of 30 degrees on some occasions. Weather: These are the coldest months in Australia with spurts of rainfall and chilly breezes that fill the atmosphere.
Is Australia hotter than India? India is closer to the equator as compared to Australia, and is therefore expected to be hotter. The average temperature in most of the interior regions of India is 90–104 °F. Whereas in Australia the average temperature in summer is 86 °F.
Australia's average temperature has increased on average by 1.44 ± 0.24 °C since national records began in 1910. Since 1950, every decade has been warmer than the decade before.
The highest temperature ever recorded in Australia is 50.7 °C (123.3 °F), which was recorded on 2 January 1960 at Oodnadatta, South Australia and 13 January 2022 at Onslow, Western Australia. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Australia is −23.0 °C (−9.4 °F), at Charlotte Pass, New South Wales, on 29 June 1994.
Interactive world map showing temperatures across the globe proves Australia is the hottest place on earth.
1. Marble Bar, Western Australia. Marble Bar claims to be the hottest town in Australia. It holds the record for the highest average monthly maximum temperature, which is 41.5°C in December.
The report stated there was “very high confidence” that temperatures would rise across Australia throughout the century, with the average annual temperature set to be up to 1.3C warmer in 2030 compared with the average experienced between 1986 and 2005.
The mobile-friendly MyClimate 2050 tool shows almost all areas across Australia will experience longer and hotter summers, with temperatures increasing by an average of 2.32°C.
According to a new Climate Council report, by 2040, summertime temperatures on hot days in Sydney and Melbourne will be approaching 50 degrees, making summer sport as it is played at present untenable.
Q) Which Australian City Has The Worst Weather? Adelaide and Melbourne take the crown when it comes to cities with the worst weather in Australia. Both these cities are generally a lot cooler than others and also experience a lot more rainfall and fewer sunny days.
Global warming has led to higher summer temperatures across Sydney over the past 30 years. However, our data analysis shows very hot summer days are becoming much more common in Western Sydney than in coastal Sydney. These hotter summers are also getting longer.
Australia's climate is governed mostly by its size and by the hot, sinking air of the subtropical high pressure belt (subtropical ridge or Australian High). This moves north-west and north-east with the seasons.
Oodnadatta, South Australia
Of course we Aussies don't have to travel far to feel the heat, especially during the Australian summer months. The record for the highest official temperature ever recorded in Australia belongs to the remote outback town of Oodnadatta in South Australia.
The warming will likely cause a number of key trends:
Accelerated sea level rise and worsening coastal erosion. Increased weather intensity including Category 6 cyclones. More frequent and extreme bushfires. A greater chance of extreme flood events.
Tasmania is Australia's coldest state overall because it is closer to the polar zone compared to the other Australian states and territories, and experiences more frequent bursts of cold Antarctic air. The coldest nights occur when the conditions are clear and calm, especially if there is snow cover.
The national record is -23 degrees at Charlotte Pass in 1994 which is also the record for New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. For individual states and territories, records haven't been broken for an even longer period of time. In Victoria, the record is -11.7 at Falls Creek in 1970 and Omeo in 1965.
New research suggests that, if the planet keeps warming at current rates, much of the top third of Australia could soon be too hot for people to live in.
Maximum temperatures are expected to be higher than average over most of Australia this winter, particularly during the second half of the season if El Niño and a positive IOD become entrenched. Tasmania scored highly in the report in terms of its climate, electricity supply, agricultural resources and population density. The study states that rising populations and energy use have led to climate change, increased risk of pandemics and ecological destruction.
