Generally speaking, you can go about five days without pooping before you run into the risk of serious health issues like fecal impaction, hemorrhoids, or a bowel perforation.
There are a few complications that could happen if you don't have soft, regular bowel movements. Some complications include: Swollen, inflamed veins in your rectum (a condition called hemorrhoids). Tears in the lining of your anus from hardened stool trying to pass through (called anal fissures).
“It would be an emergency if you hadn't had a bowel movement for a prolonged time, and you're also experiencing major bloating or severe abdominal pain,” notes Dr. Zutshi. Slight symptoms will not take you to the emergency room. You should go to the emergency room if your symptoms are severe.
A person should talk with their doctor if they go more than a week without pooping, if the constipation lasts for more than 3 consecutive months, or if it does not respond to at-home treatment. Children and pregnant women should receive medical care if they experience bowel symptoms for more than a few weeks.
"As long as it doesn't cause any discomfort or interfere with quality of life, it's perfectly fine to go once every two weeks. That doesn't make you a sicker person," she says. What's abnormal is any sudden change in your bowel movements that lasts for a couple weeks and has no explanation, Schnoll-Sussman says.
Fecal retention
(Bowel motility refers to how well the digestive system can move contents through it.) If they're eating and not pooping, the colon can become dangerously distended, a condition called "megacolon." The feces can become hard and impacted, and the bowel can actually rupture.
You may need a stimulant laxative, like Dulcolax, which spurs movement in your bowel muscles. But your body can become dependent on these, making it harder to go on your own, so don't rely on them for more than a couple of weeks.
If you do not pass any bowel movements for over one week, Dr. Bedford added that is an additional reason to seek medical attention. After seven days, your constipation may not necessarily be an emergency, but a healthcare provider can prevent the situation from becoming one.
Bisacodyl is a laxative. This type of medicine can help you empty your bowels if you have constipation (difficulty pooing). Bisacodyl is also used in hospitals to help you empty your bowels before surgery or some examinations or treatments. Your hospital will explain how to use it.
If you take laxatives too often, you could keep your body from “knowing” when it's time to have a bowel movement. Your body will be less likely to respond to the urge to go, and stool may build up in your colon or rectum.
If laxatives don't work, ask for help. You should see your doctor and discuss it if you are constantly needing to take laxatives.
Identifying Bowel Obstruction Symptoms
Most people affected by a bowel obstruction are unable to pass gas or have a bowel movement, and may have a swollen abdomen. Infrequent bowel movements or hard stools usually do not indicate obstruction.
When is constipation an emergency? Mild constipation is common. Very severe constipation or constipation accompanied by certain warning signs — such as blood in the stool or severe abdominal pain — can constitute a medical emergency.
The fastest-working oral laxatives include mineral oil, saline laxatives (like magnesium hydroxide and magnesium citrate), and stimulant laxatives (like bisacodyl and senna tablets). Common OTC products in this group include Milk of Magnesia, Dulcolax, and Senokot.
Usually constipation will go away on its own within a couple of days to a few weeks. But if you're experiencing pain or haven't pooped in more than two weeks, it's time to see a healthcare provider. You should also get medical treatment if you have a fever in addition to constipation or if there is blood in your stool.
Try natural laxatives that work fast for constipation relief, which include: aloe vera, leafy greens, chia and flax seeds, high fiber fruits, probiotic foods, and coconut water. Also make sure to drink plenty of water/fluids when consuming natural laxatives, since these work with high fiber foods to help soften stool.
Push: keeping your mouth slightly open and breathing normally, push into your waist and lower abdomen (tummy). You should feel your tummy bulge out even more, this pushes the faeces (poo) from the rectum (lower end of the bowel) into the anal canal (back passage).
