IBS is a chronic condition that may be lifelong. Doctors do not completely understand how it develops or how to cure it. Treatment aims to relieve symptoms. Flare-ups of symptoms tend to come and go over time and can last for days, weeks, or months.
stomach pain or cramps – usually worse after eating and better after doing a poo. bloating – your tummy may feel uncomfortably full and swollen. diarrhoea – you may have watery poo and sometimes need to poo suddenly. constipation – you may strain when pooing and feel like you cannot empty your bowels fully.
The pain in IBS is related to a change in the part of the brain that receives signals from the gut, which “turns up the volume” on sensations. This understanding of the brain–gut connection is essential, not only to the cause of the chronic pain, but also to its treatment. There is no cure for pain in IBS.
Patients with IBS may describe the abdominal discomfort in different ways, such as sharp pain, cramping, bloating, distention, fullness or even burning. The pain may be triggered by eating specific foods, following a meal, emotional stress, constipation or diarrhea. Other symptoms include: Mucus in stool.
Eat fermented foods.
Include plenty of probiotic-rich foods like kimchi, kombucha, miso, or sauerkraut. Sometimes, you can also eat yogurt if you are not allergic to dairy. Try unsweetened sheep or goat yogurt. These are all foods that help your gut flora get and stay healthy.

What to eat during an IBS flare. Some of my clients find that eating foods lower in fermentable carbohydrates during a flare up of IBS can improve symptoms. FODMAPs are in common healthy foods, but in some people with IBS they can cause bloating, gas, cramps or diarrhoea.
Conventional analgesic drugs, such as paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opiates are unlikely to relieve pain in IBS, and some have the potential to exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms.
Some common IBS triggers include diet, stress, infection and medications. Many people with IBS notice that some foods make their symptoms worse, but these 'trigger foods' differ from one person to the next.
Certain grains: Gluten-free oatmeal and brown rice are usually well-received by people with IBS and provide soluble fiber, which helps regulate bowel movements. Low-fat yogurt: Some people with IBS have worse symptoms after eating dairy foods.
The two things most likely to make your IBS symptoms worse are the foods you eat and having emotional stress. Diet. Eating makes your colon muscles move or contract. This normally gives you an urge to have a bowel movement 30 to 60 minutes after a meal.
While irritable bowel syndrome is not life-threatening, if left untreated it can lead to hemorrhoids, mood disorders and impact quality of life for anyone who suffers from it. Irritable bowel syndrome affects about 10 – 15 percent of the worldwide population.
If your abdominal pain or IBS is interrupting your life and the pain is so persistent that you can no longer function, go to the nearest emergency room. Your doctor will want to rule out other, more serious conditions. If you have a fever that accompanies abdominal pain or cramping, you should seek medical help.
Altering the bacteria in the gut, with antibiotics or probiotics, may improve symptoms of IBS. In PI-IBS some people develop IBS-type symptoms following an episode of gastroenteritis, while most others recover completely.
Reduce your processed food intake, cut down on alcohol, caffeine & free sugar or fatty foods. Focus instead on including foods in a natural state. Eat lots of vegetables, whole grains, fruits and proteins from either beans / pulses, or fish and meats.
