How Long Does a Brain MRI Take? An MRI typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes. The exam may take longer if the contrast is involved. Staff will let you know how long the exam should take once you arrive.
The procedure is painless. You don't feel the magnetic field or radio waves, and there are no moving parts around you. During the MRI scan, the internal part of the magnet produces repetitive tapping, thumping and other noises. You might be given earplugs or have music playing to help block the noise.

For some MRI exams, depending on the body part being imaged, we may not need to have your head inside the scanner at all. This dramatically lowers the expectation or experience of claustrophobia.
After the scan, you can resume normal activities immediately. But if you have had a sedative, a friend or relative will need to take you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. It's not safe to drive, operate heavy machinery or drink alcohol for 24 hours after having a sedative.
It's important that patients remove all clothing prior to their MRI exam. We ask patients to remove: All outer clothing, including shoes. Bras or any undergarment that could have metal in it.
A head MRI and a brain MRI are the same procedure. They both provide images of the inside of your head. While healthcare providers most often use head and brain MRIs to assess your brain, these imaging procedures provide images of other structures in your head, too, such as facial bones, blood vessels and nerves.

When not properly accommodated during an MRI, claustrophobic patients may experience panic attacks, which can bring on increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, chills, sweating, and other distressing symptoms.
Unless you've been given medication or a sedative, you can resume your daily activities. Once your MRI scan is complete, you'll be escorted back to the changing area to retrieve your belongings. If your doctor gave you any medication or sedation, DO NOT attempt to drive yourself home.
Please wear comfortable clothing, preferably cotton, and leave your jewelry and valuables at home.
