Freshly expressed or pumped milk can be stored: At room temperature (77°F or colder) for up to 4 hours. In the refrigerator for up to 4 days. In the freezer for about 6 months is best; up to 12 months is acceptable.
Breast milk should never be re-refrigerated or re-frozen. These guidelines are important. Bacteria can begin to grow in your breast milk if it is left out too long.
Assuming that you've made sure your pump equipment is clean, after pumping or expressing some milk, smell it and taste it. Does it smell or taste sour, or does it smell fine and taste a bit sweet? If it does smell or taste sour, then it indicates the presence of rancid fats and chemical oxidation.
The more milk your baby removes from your breasts, the more milk you will make. Despite views to the contrary, breasts are never truly empty. Milk is actually produced nonstop—before, during, and after feedings—so there's no need to wait between feedings for your breasts to refill.
Stomach cramps: Babies using spoiled, expired, or lumpy breast milk can cause stomach cramps, bloating, bloating, upset stomach, and fussiness. Food poisoning: Often spoiled breast milk will be contaminated, causing the infant to be infected with bacteria and have diarrhea and vomiting.
If a mother has consumed more than a moderate amount of alcohol, she may choose to wait 2 hours (per drink) to breastfeed her child, or feed her infant with milk that had been previously expressed when she had not been drinking, to reduce her infant's exposure to alcohol.
Some moms notice the morning milk has more volume and lower fat content, while the evening milk may have more fat but be lower in volume. By pooling your breast milk, you ensure baby receives nourishment that is more uniform and consistent.
Can I mix freshly expressed breast milk with older breast milk? Mixing freshly expressed breast milk with already cooled or frozen milk is not advised because it can rewarm the older stored milk. It is best to cool freshly expressed milk before combining it with older, previously cooled or frozen milk.
You can let your baby nurse on one side and pump the other side simultaneously. Just remember to start your baby's next nursing session on the side they didn't nurse from previously as a breastfeeding baby is capable of emptying the breast more than any mechanical pump.
If your baby did not finish the bottle, use the leftover milk within 2 hours after the baby is finished feeding. After 2 hours, leftover breast milk should be discarded.
Human milk separates after expression (Figure 1) and needs to be remixed before feeding. Unsurprisingly, this is another place where there is plenty of advice given to mothers. And the advice is surprisingly strict: swirl, never shake.
To warm breast milk from the refrigerator: Place the bottle in a bowl of warm water or run it under warm water. Microwaving breast milk is not safe due to the risk of scalding your baby with hot milk. Freeze breast milk if you will not be using it within 24 hours.
Blue or Clear
Usually blueish or clear, watery breast milk is indicative of “foremilk.” Foremilk is the first milk that flows at the start of a pumping (or nursing) session and is thinner and lower in fat than the creamier, whiter milk you see at the end of a session.
While the exact time that prolactin levels peak seems to differ from person to person, it most often occurs somewhere between 11 pm and 7 am. High prolactin levels at these times could lead to higher levels of milk production at these times.
You make more watery or thirst quenching milk in the morning, and less volume but fattier milk in the evening. This is why your baby may want to cluster feed or fuss feed in the evenings. Your milk producing hormone prolactin is highest in the middle of the night.
You can relax if you spaced and left the milk sitting on the nightstand for a bit, it's okay. In fact, you can grab this same bottle three hours later and continue pumping into it. Or, if you're power pumping to increase your supply, you can pump into the same bottles multiple times within the four hour window.
Something I recommend to moms is the 5-5-5 rule. Try and use milk within five hours at room temperature, five days in the fridge, and by five months in the freezer.

What are the “3 Golden Hours”? The 3 Golden Hours refer to the immediate hours after a mother gives birth. It's so important that mothers are given the opportunity to be skin to skin with their babies during these 3 hours to breastfeed their baby and form that immediate bond.
“Fat globules” in milk are actually biofilm formation from bacteria, cholesterol/lipids in the milk, and general ductal debris (dead cells), usually in the setting of hyperlactation (oversupply) and dybiosis (imbalance of breastmilk microbiome).
Milk that has a high level of lipase can develop a soapy smell and taste, but is not harmful to the baby. Most babies don't mind it, but if yours starts rejecting the milk (either with their first taste or later as they develop taste preferences), there is a way to prevent and fix it.
Breast compression is a useful technique to keep breast milk flowing during a breastfeed by gently squeezing and compressing the breast. Breast compression can increase milk flow, keep a baby feeding longer and, by emptying the breasts more thoroughly, it also helps to increase milk supply.
