Spread of Islam
Islam is an independent monotheistic religion and goes back, like Christianity and Judaism, to Abraham, the progenitor of the Israelites. Today, Islam is the second largest religious community and has about 1.8 billion followers.
Arab Australians are mainly concentrated in Victoria and New South Wales. Smaller groups also reside in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia, with fewer in Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.
Population. At the end of June 2021, 95,980 Pakistani-born people were living in Australia, almost three times the number (34,150) at 30 June 2011.
Hirofumi Tanada, professor emeritus of sociology at Waseda University in Tokyo, reckons that Japan is now home to more than 200,000 Muslims. A study by Tanada and his colleagues showed there were 113 mosques across Japan in March 2021, up from only 15 in 1999.
The islands were settled by different seafaring Melanesian cultures such as the Torres Strait Islanders over 2500 years ago, and cultural interactions continued via this route with the Aboriginal people of northeast Australia.
Between 2014–15 and 2018–19, after adjusting for inflation, the median gross weekly personal income for Indigenous Australians aged 18 and over fell by 5.6%, from $518 to $489 (Figure 1).
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' rights and interests in land are formally recognised over around 50 per cent of Australia's land mass. Connection to land is of central importance to First Nations Australians.
