MELBOURNE, Australia — American F-22 fighters are training in northern Australia alongside the host nation's F-35A jets as part of an initiative meant to improve interoperability between their armed forces.
With only 186 Raptors in the entire Air Force inventory, getting just one of the formidable air-to-air fighters back to operations represents a significant achievement for the 3rd Wing at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, where the F-22 is assigned.
“We hope for the opportunity to deliver additional F-35s beyond” the 72 Australia has on order, Executive Vice President of Aeronautics Greg Ulmer said on the sidelines of the Australia International Airshow.

The 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor has been spotted in Australia.
There are 35 Australian Raptors (also known as Birds of Prey). They include 18 members of the Accipitridae family (Kites, Harriers, Goshawks, Eagles, Pacific Baza, and Osprey), and 6 members of the Falconidae family (Falcons and Kestrel).

By Julian Bajkowski. Force projection may have been a major theme of the recent Defence Strategic Review, but the ability of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) to replenish Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) F-15J and F-15DJ Eagle jets has just been officially paraded for the first time.
DIGITAL. The F-35 is the country's newest fighter, bought to replace the RAAF's F/A-18A/B Classic Hornets that were in service since 1985 and retired in late 2021. Over the coming years, Australia will purchase 72 as part of the $17 billion AIR 6000 Phase 2A/B program, with all expected to be fully operational by 2023.
The F-22, the top US air superiority fighter jet, finally has it's first air-to-air kills. In a week, this jet downed a Chinese spy balloon and an unidentified "object" in two separate engagements.
The NGAD is the Air Force's ultra-stealthy and highly classified successor to the F-22 Raptor, which the service has said it must retire by around 2030 because its capabilities will be overcome by systems fielded by China and potentially other global competitors.
The F-22 Raptor is the most powerful air superiority fighter in the world, while the F-35 is probably the most advanced multi-role fighter right now. That means that the Raptor is more effective in air-to-air combats (faster and could operate at higher altitude).
The F-35 Lightning II is the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF) premier 5th Generation fighter that will meet Australia's requirements to defeat emerging threats for decades to come.
The U.S. military has access to all major ADF training areas, northern Australian RAAF airfields, port facilities in Darwin, Fremantle, Stirling naval base in Perth, and the airfield on the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean.

The retired F/A-18s are sitting in a hangar at the Williamtown RAAF base outside Newcastle. Washington's approval is needed because it owns the intellectual property on the jets that have been retired by the RAAF and which are being replaced by F-35s, of which Australia has ordered 72.
In 2007, Australia decided to retire all of its RAAF F-111s. The drawdown of the RAAF's F-111 fleet began with the retirement of the F-111G models operated by No. 6 Squadron in late 2007.
Weighing nearly a full ton, Utahraptor was the largest, most dangerous raptor that ever lived, making close relatives like Deinonychus and Velociraptor seem positively shrimpy by comparison.
Meet the Northern Goshawk
Northern Goshawks are one of the most aggressive and fiercest birds of prey. Anyone who has seen a goshawk up close will tell you, this is a bird that projects power. Its piercing stare, strong beak, powerful talons and strong presence underscore that this is a formidable predator.
Overkill by medium-sized predators is therefore a ubiquitous threat for small ground-dwelling mammals in Australia. Australia's largest extant predator is the dingo C. lupus dingo.
